What are the symptoms of needing new felt Speicher? That isn't a personal question - it's entirely a roof question

There is a dark stain (caused by water) on the ceiling in one room. There was a similar stain about five or six years ago, in another room. That was fixed by patching up a small piece of felt, and mending some damaged tiles.
I am sure Night Train can explain what roofing felt is made of, and I guess it has a limited life span. The pitch of the roof at the back of the house is very shallow, which combined with the heavy rain we have been getting, and the windiness emanating from the Malverns, has allowed water to enter the roof space.

Hmmph - leaky roof is not acceptable! I'm sure your man is correct . Maybe it's that shallowness of pitch. Just wondered as my roof is getting on for 60 years old. My workers have put some tears (that's of the hole variety) in my roofing felt. Makes the roof space more ventilated (which isn't too bad in general). Must check to see if it is leaking water!!!! As for wind from the Malverns - Mrs 26 gets "windy" sometimes - but not as frequently as would give you problems

No - I don't understand - tea made with "boiling water" on Mt Everest is cr&p apparently. Cos it doesn't boil at 100C up there. You sure it tasted good? My #1 daughter knows about these things...........

It is made of hessian, or later polyester, and bitumen. The oils in the bitumen can dry out over time causing the felt to become brittle so it cracks and tears more easily.

Wet spots can be because of water penetration, either though a hole in the tiles and the felt or through wind blown rain being driven back up the slope of the roof.
If the loft is insulated but not well ventilated then dampness can be caused by condensation forming inside on the felt and dripping off as it runs down the felt.
