I think we are going to need a separate thread for taking the mickey out of handicaps... :surrender:

The point of the handicap system is to give a close finish for as many people as possible.

The formula for setting the handicaps is designed to reduce the chance of an over performance resulting in an early starter never being caught by the pack and hence romping away to a solo finish, so initially it errs slightly on the side of caution, as trailing in a little behind only affects that one person, whereas winning by miles affects everyone.

As you record finishes your handicap is adjusted and you are given more credit for each finish, as it is based on the best time from multiple runs, and therefore the chance of over performance is reduced.

The only circumstances under which a handicap should need adjusting is if your form has changed radically or if a previous run was unrepresentative of your abilities (due to a glitch perhaps). I am more than happy to agree a different handicap that will lead to a closer finish.

If anyone really thinks their handicap should be changed, perhaps they could PM me with what they think it should be and why!

That way I can safely ignore the jibes posted here! ;)

In my first post on this board I described myself as an IT idiot, I'm now going to prove it.

I've had a go at catching up on old chain gang rides, I've gone into 'set up' and seen a number of Ghosts and assumed I'd be riding with them. But when I start the ride I'm on my own, not even a bot for company. How can I make to ghosts appear on the ride and can I select which ones I want?

You need to click on the picture of the ghost you want to add to your ride by hovering over it and it will put a + sign for you to click for ghosts.

it's pretty much the same process for the bot's from what i can remember.

............ and I should point out she's not ridden a bike in the 39 years we have been married.
My parents have just moved out to Spain, to retire. They have just bought themselves bikes. I can not recall either of them riding before .

It has been at least 25 years since I was last regularly riding. I am 50 . I am not sure how they are going to take to riding where they are. It is not exactly flat

I'm still relatively new around these parts Geoff but I think I can confidently say everyone here is super grateful for all your efforts!

The handicap races are awesome. I think maybe the reasons people have a grumble is a) humans love a good Moan up! And b) it hurts like hell when someone comes blasting past you! :B)xx(

Rest assured every one of you who comes past me tonight is getting abuse shouted at them as they come through!! :gun:

I promise to TRY not to moan about my handicap, but I sometimes question if it is actually me controlling what comes out of my mouth!

Unsuccessful appeal = 30 seconds added to the start time, might focus minds a bit Geoff? ;)

Very grateful for the time you put in to making these handicap rides work Geoff as I'm sure everyone is :notworthy:

@kipster if (and I do appreciate this is a BIG if!) I can catch you up, you up for a bit of drafting to try to keep those dastardly fast guys behind us at bay for a little longer? We usually do most of these rides just a few seconds apart from each other most of the time anyway!

I'm sure you'll be with me fairly quickly, but yes happy to try a bit of drafting, it will help us catch @Add quickly as well, then he can help share the work. If we can get it together it should be a good scrap at the end for bragging rights!

Should have realised you have enough to do without clowns :headshake:messing about,

I spend far too much time on this forum precisely because I have other stuff to do, but the banter on here is much more entertaining!

Sorry

Sorry, Geoff. I thought it would be funny to imply I am one of the fantastic 4. And to make matters worse I am not going to be able to take an early lunch as I planned, so after talking smack I am not even in the race.

Whoosh! Went straight over my head, I'm afraid...

As with all online stuff, it's not always possible to be sure if someone is serious or joking, unless it's Adam, as he is always ticking the p...

Impressed that you think anyone is involved in controlling it!

I just tried suggesting to Mrs Soarerv8 that instead of going out for a birthday meal would she like a nice relaxed meal at home.

I got a very dirty look and a "no you aren't going on your bike" that leads me to believe I will not be riding anything tonight.

Another subtle one there
