I ventured out into the real world for the first time this year. I took my fat tire rig up Little Cottonwood. Caught the first 1:40 with the gopro, but the battery died. Will have to try again, but bringing along the portable usb charger. No idea how the video turned out yet.

The bad news was it was a 2hr grind up and 'twas getting rather cold once I got up near the ski resorts. The good news, that was my target, I'd likely be faster on my road bike, and finally my first trip up last year was an amazingly painful 2:12. Put it together and I'm pretty happy. If there's a good day next week, I'll grind up again with the road bike and an external battery for the gopro.

when you say tyre pressure low - how low are we talking ?

Berty, as you have a classic you can use a bungee cord arrangement between the skewer holders and the black frame, nothing to tight as this may increase friction too much, just enough to stop the bike moving forwards when your out of the saddle.
Lifting the front wheel slightly will also help to transfer weight to the back and stop the bike from rocking forwards.
Instead of bungees you could use lightly tensioned roof rack straps, not the ratchet type just the sort where you pull to tighten like on a ruck-sack.

You weigh 13kg less than me Berty so you're going to want less PSI than me to prevent the wheelspin. This is a Friction vs Wheelspin situation here and if I could be bothered I'd change to my Tacx turbo tyre as it doesn't wheelspin. This is guesswork for me too, but I'm going to go for 80psi so for you I'd try 70psi. Worth a quick test first pre-race to make sure it feels good up a steep hill. I might raise the front of the bike a bit for this to make it feel better standing up.

Berty, 13 kg lighter, man or paperweight!

Not that I am lazy you understand but I find this whole standing up lark very wearing. I have therefore raised my seat to pretty well where I would be stood up so I am stood up yet sat down.

This is why you keep me around, not just for my dashing good looks but also my brilliant ideas.

You are welcome.

The only issue I would have with this otherwise 'genius' solution, would be the increased risk of some serious groin rubbage.
I can only assume you already have some provision in place to hold your Financial Times in the correct position whilst cycling, and I trust the young Philipino lad who turns the pages is adequately compensated for his services?

i cant help thinking the cravat and smoking jacket make life a little harder on the turbo !

It is the pipe that causes the biggest issues

PS. I can ignore your comments by recognising that we brilliant people have been mocked throughout history. I bet the first man to get milk from a cow his friends were all "erm Brian do you think you should be doing that to that cow it doesn't look very happy........oh God man NO don't bloody drink it you wierdo that's gross!" And look where we are now with milk!

See.

Point proven.

God damn there's nothing better than pulling a sickie once in a while. I feel like I'm cheating the world!!

Daughters are at nursery and college respectively. Missus at work. I'm off for a slap up breakfast and a beautifully, blissfully peaceful read of the paper. Then off for a few laps of the park with an Italian cycling legend!

One day like this a year would see me right.

Have a good day all!

Enjoy TT. Not often we get to brush shoulders with legends, especially this Italian Stallion. I sense the beginnings of a man crush;)

Tonight's Chaingang is Stage 5 in Provincia di Udine (otherwise known as "Satan's Ladder" whilst being whispered in hushed tones in bkool circles)
I will be starting the ride at 7pm with a 10 minute warmup.
So let some air out of your tyre for maximum traction but not too much. Go for steady power and try to avoid "gaming" the blue speed numbers if possible.
See you all at 7pm.
