I too crashed into a car yesterday. Not through not looking, but through being tramlined by red paint lines in a cycle lane.

So easily done.

Last week, I had just looked over my left shoulder when exiting a RAB, as I looked ahead (less than a second later), I realised the car in front had stopped, still on the RAB.

I managed to stop in time, but it was close!

Touch wood the only time I've done it was on a club run; I was in a second group with a merc behind (just coming up to here), he decided to go for the overtake only to realise it wasn't possible to overtake both packs with a road narrowing, speed table and an oncoming car swerved back in between us and slammed on his brakes. I pulled on the brakes and fortunately the folk behind me had left a wee bit of a gap or it could have been worse, I did an endo and my shifter just hit the boot  They were trying to blame me for a scratch on the back of their car but I'd stayed up right and there wasn't a mark on my shifters. I gave them my details but they never got back to me, makes me suspect the scratch was there already
I almost did another time; along a pancake flat piece of road I was going a good speed, not drafting but a bit close to the car in front; when he slammed on his brakes a mili second later I found out why, there was oil all over the road. That was close

I can top this for embarrassing crashes.

I was 15, pedalled off down the road, looked down to check my gear (pre days of SIS) and bang.

Straight into a new Porsche 928. Dent in boot. Alarm went off. Oh hell. Neighbour came rushing out - was actually OK about it, as he had friends in the business who could sort it. Phew.

Also from you youth, cycling back home from work, dark lanes of deepest darkest Cheshire, with my Ever Ready lights (pre mega watt stuff we have now) - bang, crashed into the back of a Ford Escort. That really hut as I'd hit it with the top of my left thigh. Could hardly walk - hobbled 15 miles home.

I remember one of the many bike races round the block when we were kids... the leader was obviously peddling as fast as he could, and also looking behind him to see how much a lead he had on us, before going straight in the back of a parked Austin Maxi... needless to say the car was not damaged.

Yes, minor bumps are all part of life. A year ago, a van pulled out into to the middle of a training peloton I was in. i was the lead rider in the 2nd group and was keen to pass as the main peloton was now pulling away on a 2-3% gradient. So, we were close drafting the van and I started to accelerate ready to pop out when an oncoming car passed. the van then noticed he had split the group, and hit the brakes. I did a lovely tom and jerry impersonation spread onto the back of the van. No damage, we laughed, the driver came around and helped me up- but bloody embarrassing.

When #1 son was 13 he crashed into a parked car...and he's never lived it down!
He went to the shop for me, to get some more milk, just before the turning to the shops he spotted an ambulance & a police car, blue lights all going, so was looking over to his right to see what had happned, he then looked straight ahead, but too late! There was a red BMW parked with it's nose sticking out of a driveway..He hit the side & did a rolypoly over the bonnet!
He came home, bu never mentioned any of this, about a minute later the police turned up. They told me they saw it happen, he had been checked over by paramedics & they had wanted to bring him immediatly but he'd refused as I needed the milk for his baby brother! They also sadi there had been NO damage to the car.
About 30 min later the driver arrived, caliming my son had scratched his car, when I asked to see the car I was told it was at his house & he'd walked here...?? I told him I wanted to see the car, I made several attempts to view it, all met with vague excuses, I contacted the pc we had spoke to who was adamant that there had been no danage to the car . I told the owner this & said I would not pay a penny
A week later a letter arrived addressed to my son from drivers insurance compnay, claiming he had dented the car & left deep gouges accross the bonnet, it gave him 7 days to pay for the repairs & included a receipt for £900 worth of work
I called them & told them that the police had said no damage & unless they had actula proof my son had caused any danage I was definatly not paying, I aslo said that writing to a 13yr old child was out of order, they said they did not realise Callum was only 13, but the claim still stood..
We're not taling abrand new spanking BMW here, we're talking one that was a heap of crap & it's value according to Glass was less then £500, so WTF would you spend £900 on it...?
I contacted the CAB & needless to say the claim was dropped...Funny, it turns out this wasn't the first time this driver had cliamed money for reapirs to his car, thwe work all supposedly carried out by the same firm... The one his brother owned!!

Lee before you get on your high horse, the taxi accident was just that and I exchanged details and apologised - it was an accident, so stop being so self righteous eh - Mr Goody two shoes I don't think eh ? I could have jumped on the bike and rode of - I didn't, I stopped, explained I was insured and gave him my details.

I was filtering at a steady speed, not quickly, hit a hole, front wheel went and down I went - just so happened to be a taxi in the way. Accident's happen, but I guess they don't in your case !

The other two I was a kid !

Reading these posts reminds me of a sight that made me wince & think, "ooo, that's got to hurt". I was walking to school one day up Kingston Road, Taunton and was just opposite Barry The Bakers when I watched a middle aged lady cycling merrily down the hill on her shopper in the opposite direction. Then there was the horrible realisation that she wasn't looking ahead and that there wasn't time to give a warning; BANG straight into the back of the vehicle parked (legally) outside the bakers. The vehicle occupants got out and helped the lady to her feet & made sure she was ok, but then you expect that from firemen!!

I managed to very nearly ride into the back of a white van in stop-start traffic earlier in the year. It was on West Street in Crewe heading west towards the Dunwoody Way lights and I was too close to the rear of the van when it began to brake, I was doing 10-15 mph at the time. Cue me grabbing the front brake and for some reason leaning forward so the bike dramatically tilts forward and I nudge the rear door with my hand. The driver was okay about it and we laughed it off but I was a little red-faced to say the least as there were quite a few cars behind me who saw it

Luckily this was before I put clipless pedals on the bike, otherwise it could've got a bit hairy!
