I'll post a link to streetview when I'm back home (currently on the phone) but there's a stretch of road on my way home with two lanes going my way, one lane going the other, and the two lanes turn left as they reach a one way system, with traffic lights and a traffic island. I generally stay on the right lane, then dismount on to the traffic island then walk over to the pavement where there's a cycle lane so i can ride contrary to the one way system.

As i pulled on to the traffic island, some guy stops and shouts "oi that's an illegal move you ****". Sensing he just wants to have a go rather than a sensible discussion on road use i give him a funny look and carry on my way.

Although he may have a point, but how does one stop to cross a road on to a cycle path in moving traffic?

So I'm coming along in the lane to the right of the black mini pictured. If there's a red light, I'll stop, dismount and walk on to the traffic island. If it's green and there's no pedestrians I'll ride onto the island (this I suspect is the alleged 'illegal move') then stop and dismount. Then I press the button and cross onto the cycle path shown in red on the right. I should also admit if there's no one around I might just ride straight over.

technically , and it would be an arse of a copper/PCSO who did it, you could get a ticket for riding on the pavement as the island is pavement.

In Norwich I once saw them ticket people for using the cycle path

Errm, I'd just do what you did. The driver is obviously so amazing that they can pay too much attention over things like this to have to worry about what they're doing.

I'd do the same and have done the same. I usually dismount as soon as I reach the kerb.

One minute its ok to ride on the pavement, the next its not. Where's the logic ? You'd be nuts to follow mount and dismount when you really should on uk cycle paths - you might as well ride a pogo stick to acheive the same effect.

I don't think I would ever dismount there because it is pointless. What really matters is that you take care around pedestrians.

I get yelled at around here for being an illegal, at first I thought they knew I was an escapee from East Anglia. But it's because I'm anywhere but in the gutter, and I'm never in the gutter, perhapse he took offense at you being 'too far' to the right, on his road.

I assume you mean the segregated bit of cycle path on the pavement, not the cycle lane marked off with a dotted line on the carriageway! That last looks well dodgy to tackle contraflow! (or any-flow, for that matter ).

Not the on-road one! That's for going with the traffic - although I do occasionally encounter people riding the wrong way on it - such as the young lady this morning who I would have had a go at were it not for her being staggeringly beautiful. I'm so weak.

I had thought it was the on-road one, and was wondering why anyone would want to cycle against the traffic in that...

I can't see anything wrong with what you're doing (now I understand it).

(But, if you encounter a georgeous young woman doing something potentially lethal (like cycling the wrong way in that on-road cycle lane) surely if you show her the error of her ways she might be grateful and friendly and stuff?)
