My nephew Oli (nearly 4 now) has a book of Things that Go! and we were looking at the In the Air page last week. I pointed to Concorde and told him how it flies flew really fast, and then at the Harrier, and how it flies flew straight up and down, and backwards. I felt very old, and a little sad that these marvels of my age are now history.

'Ladies and Gentlemen, you may smoke your cigarettes if you wish, Cocktails, lunch and afternoon tea will be coming round shortly, and we can supply you with more cigarettes if you need them'.

My sister used to work for British Airways and told me that the aircraft mechanics were a bit peeved when smoking was banned on planes. They used the nicotine stains to detect tiny stress fractures in the hulls.

It seemed unlikely but I dug out this letter to the Telegraph...

Sir - The reduction in oxygen levels in cabins took place after airlines banned smoking and reduced the supply of fresh air. They were keen to do this, because air conditioning uses substantial quantities of fuel, and they could save money by banning smoking and recycling the air over and over again.

Cigarette smoke in the air is noticeable, although the system of putting smokers in the back of the plane used to work quite well in conjunction with a generous supply of fresh air.

However, many other noxious but undetectable items can be present in stale air, including bacteria, and passengers may well be more exposed to these than they were before smoking was banned.

Life has also become more difficult for service engineers. When checking for leaks from the pressurised hull, they used to examine the outside for tell-tale nicotine stains, which are no longer present.

Blimey, I'd forgotten there was a Lightning display team. That would be an awesome sight.

When I was a child, I was taken to an air display at RAF Gaydon. Lots of interesting stuff was going on, including me being allowed to sit in the cockpit of a fighter. I can't remember what it was but I was 'dead excited'!

Then there was a really boring bit where we were all standing at the side of a runway and nothing much was happening. I was looking across the runway wondering when the display would start when suddenly two Lightnings crossed in opposite directions about 100 ft up directly in front of me going at Mach A-lot! The entire crowd leapt back and screamed as one. Scary!

I have been on a Britten Norman Islander where you can see out the front when landing in a severe crosswind - I could see the runway looming towards us from my side window!
