Ipley crossroads in the New Forest is an accident black spot due to the road layout causing a blind spot on the approach from the minor sides and 90% of drivers ignoring the stop signs. I've been knocked off there and got away with minor injuries, but people have died in the same circumstances https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/18...-latest-accident-ipley-crossroads-new-forest/ it needs to be made staggered or at least some humps put in but despite years of campaigning, nothings been done.
Until now! Pictures below are on the major (right of way direction) of the road, that's that sorted then:sad:

And your council really thinks that will work?

As a point of order, the junction is benign. It's the people that use it that are dangerous. It just so happens that the characteristics of the junction are such that there is not the room for error that usually saves the typical HUA driver from themselves, but thousands conscientious and careful drivers use it daily without incident.

If you stand there and watch, a good 8 out of 10 drivers fail to stop at the stop sign.

Yep, but thousands do stop - this proves it's a driving issue, not an architectural one. It's a reflection on the poor state of our nations road users. I've driven it myself on may occasions and had no problems, but I am careful and competent.

It ain't the junction leaping up and killing people - its car drivers and, as aforementioned, the junction is such that the usually careless idiots don't have the margin for error they usually rely upon. You can bet they'd slow right bloody quick if a speed camera appeared there.

I've an idea. Close off the surrounding roads, strip naked, paint a target on your back, and go and stand in the middle of the junction. No one will try to kill you, and by a simple process of elimination you have established the cause of the problem.

a case for traffic lights
a speed Camera
It's the New Forest ffs. I will take it you're both joking.
This is a case for a simple bend on the 'Stop' (lower precedence) road to create a staggered junction (both meeting at right angles to enhance visibility) and forced slowing (if not stopping) of vehicles approaching the cross roads. ETA: Reading the article's addendum I see that that would cost circa £100k.

Or as @Drago suggested a speed Camera or any kind of Camera.
Good idea... a speed camera might do it but that'll just stop people speeding past the camera, it won't make them stop at the junction or be more aware. Or a Road Traffic Order taking the speed limit down to 40mph 400 yards away and 20mph 200 yards away on all 4 sides with mobile speed cameras deployed every week or so until people get used to having to slow right down....

This one?

If people have been killed at the junction then something has to be done- you can't rely on people improving their skills or observation.

Sight lines are fantastic- no limiting forward visibility issues which would slow approaching traffic- it's just people mis-timing their approaching speed and time to cross or mis-judging other vehicles' closing speed. Creating a staggered junction on the side roads would leave cars potentially waiting in the carriageway in each direction waiting to turn right so that's as bad, if not worse.... a roundabout would do it.... a proper big circle with grass in the middle one mind, not a painted one on the road- the cost is irrelevant if it stops someone's dad or mum or son/daughter being killed.

Read the article, Archie. CBDR plus drivers not slowing down (on lower precedence road) at all, as they approach the crossroads.

As you say: "sight lines are fantastic- no limiting forward visibility issues" so why on earth would that be "as bad". And anyway it won't be cyclists being killed in your 'as bad' scenario.

A similarly dangerous junction on the A59 near Clitheroe was turned into a roundabout when a builder got PP to build a mahoosive estate on the road into town. Hooray for bunging the council, eh?

That's precisely the issue with open crossroads and junctions... staggering the junctions would help but a roundabout would probably be cheaper, and it wouldn't involve widening the main road to 10.5m to create protected high turns. Drivers don't show down when they have clear open sightlines for hundreds of metres- they take even greater risks if anything as they think they can 'time' their approaches to keep going to avoid stopping.

Ironically planting screen belts of shrubs and trees on the side turn legs 20 metres back from the main road would severely reduce forward visibility and force traffic to slow down to be able to see [9x210 metres FVS emerging from side roads onto a main road with a 60mph national speed limit.

A roundabout would cut out the head on smashes or side impacts at 60mph.
