Should have discussed it with her before putting the money down.

This really pees me off TBH. You get numpty's who dont bother with training, or safety gear, have an off because they don't know what they are doing and then tell the rest of the world for time in memorial that motorcycles are dangerous.... and then people who have no actual experience of them, take this as being gospel.

Love cycling in the winter. Even minus fifteen and a foot of snow. Some of us commute every day.

Bit stupid buying a motorbike without your mum's permission. Thought you'd have had that before going ahead.

A lot of it is perception though. This is my daughter taken a few years ago going over a jump made of telegraph poles on a half tonne horse. she shies away from motorcycles now saying they are a bit too risky, but thinks nothing of doing this.

Blimey, dodgy people in Rhyll must be fond of an early night.
Its just the people on the bus. Normally drunks/druggies. I dont even like getting the bus in the day.
To commute to college, I have to get the bus at 7am to be there for 9am. However, when cycling I set off at 7.30am and get there the same time. The bus just isnt an efficient way of getting anywhere.
To commute to work, I beat the bus on my journey and end up passing it about 4 times.

I will put up with cycling this winter and will get a car next year.

He did initially. He wasnt happy about it either. My dad would have probably let me keep it, my mother is the one who always worries too much.

That is mums job. My O/H is a terrible worrier. If she saw what I am encountering as a cyclist, I think she would have more to worry about than me riding the motorcycle. Being a motorcyclist, you are part of the traffic flow, only on fast roads do you get passed, on a bicycle, there are few places where you won't be (unless in rush hour in the town)

You really should have properly agreed this. Yes you are 18 but as you are living at home there are house rules.

Never got myself a motorbike as I know what I am like on a pedal bike. Cars are just a major hole in the pocket. Save your cash. A deposit for a house is more important.

And I do giggle when I see people on litre-and-a-quarter BMW 'off-roaders' trying to get through traffic. I was quite taken by the Paris-Dakar look in the 1980s and even considered buying a Cagiva 750 Elefant (essentially a Ducati dirt bike). I had large off-roaders by the standards of the day, but they were NOTHING like the spaceships we're seeing from BMW and others. Even the original (and best) R80 G/S was unusable off-road for all but Schwartzenegger. It was a lovely, lunky, gentle tourer with sweet delivery and no melodrama, but at 5' 8" I needed a ladder to get on it.

Keep it simple and keep it small-cube.

Yes, I got stuck behind a GS behemoth in traffic recently, he'd filtered until he could filter no more, reason being he was riding a stupid bike bigger than car with crash bars and aluminum panniers stuck out either side. Maybe he was intending to cross the Nullarbor plain after tea, but I doubt it. I had an NX650 Dominator, that could go anywhere too, but it was also light, nimble, frugal and fun.Stuck in traffic on a motorbike, what is the point in owing one?

I
and it is poor advice to tell others there is little value in changing the odds.

I have never advised anybody, the pro-gear lobby did, I only countered by saying £900 quids worth of gear that was stated as a NEED, to ride a tiddly machine, is simply not a need. Each to their own but for me, the risk is infinitesimal in the first place so changing the odds.................

You don't need £900 of gear to get you going with a reasonable degree of safety. You can get adequate protection with a bit of shoppimg around for sensible money

£80 lid,
£80 boots
£70 textile armoured trousers
£70 Textile armoured jacket
£40 armoured gloves
£350 total on clothes to carry you through winter and summer
£50 for a lock and chain
£400 all in...these are prices for all weather gear...possibly less if shopping on Ebay.

I've used Rain-X in the past very successfully on a visor. They are selling something very similar now in Poundland would you believe. I've got a bottle, but yet to test it.
Mr Sheen works as well as the more expensive specific products.
Hmm, I have to honest, I recommend Mr Sheen all the time as an excellent degreaser for getting the oil and wax off the back wheel of motorcycles and other things (with an old T-shirt, but because it contains a fairly powerful solvent, I'm not sure this may mess with the strength of a visor. Maybe spray a bit on a dry cloth, and leave it for a minute for the solvent to evaporate before using it ????

It is silicone based after all so not surprised the rain runs off it. get some overspray on your saddle, and it makes for an interesting ride

MarkF, I used to own a large BMW the bike would take me to places I would not have wanted to travel to on an NX650. Bit like push bikes really when you take the time to think about it, would you go touring on a time trial bike, well OK in your case you might but I do not think it would be the best tool.

During tours to the Alps etc. I had to negotiate my way around towns, maybe some people do different things to you, have you ever thought about that.
