At one point, I claimed to have raced on most of the A1 north of Baldock (to where it has been motorway for as long as I can remember). This was a bit of an exaggeration. However:
  • Courses ran end-to-end from Baldock (used by club events) to Normans Cross at Peterborough
  • A student championship used a course between Blyth (which used to be the start of the first motorway north of Baldock) and Tuxford or somewhere
  • Harrogate Festival of Cycling events on top and bottom Boro (Boroughbridge in Yorkshire)
  • North of Newcastle, while visiting my girlfriend (she married me, so she must have forgiven my disappearing off to race during visits)
There may be the odd one more that I've forgotten. Leaves out, obviously, large sections around Grantham, Newark and Doncaster for a start.

I ordered this book from the local library service last week
It arrived at Pontefract yesterday

1906 original publication, this is a 1922 reprint

It’s been in the system for quite a while, pre 1974 at least!

The A63 junction is to the south of the village

This is probably after the bypass opened, given the lack of traffic
That’s Church Lane, to the left

Church Lane is the ‘west - east’ yellow road; https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2755141

Approximately the same location, looking north

Ove the years I've worked on lots of projects for National Highways some more interesting than others. One of the most recent was doing a historic asset management survey of the A1 from Newcastle upon Tyne to the Scottish border. This consisted of driving the route with a buddy, armed with maps showing the location of heritage assets (mostly mileposts, old bridges and culverts - many of which are listed) which NH are responsible for the upkeep of. Finding safe places to park to get a closer look was sometimes challenging, and we finished up about even on finding things that had disappeared since the last check, and finding things that had previously been presumed lost.

I remember as a teenager cycling to the Harrogate bike show from my mate's house in Thirsk. Easiest way was to take the then A1 down through Boroughbridge. The innocent thrill of being lassoed bealong by the vacuum caused by each artic still stays with me.

Didn't tell my Mum about it.

Looking back, the whole concept of being charged to be sat inside a Freewheel advert is a strange idea.
