Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
It is probably very complicated

and possibly hard work = manly

I doubt that very much.

Right anyway
cold and damp out but clear and not rainy
so I went mad and got out for a ride - went as far as putting on the neoprene overshoes taht my wife got me last Christmas
They are a right pain to get on but do keep your feet warm - glad I did as the wind chill was pretty high at times and it was cold enough as it was!

ALso decided to have a go with "Ride with GPS" rather than Strava

went really fast on the way back

That must have been some tail wind!

Oh - forgot
On the way back some kind of insect - big enough to see - swooped in from my right at speed and directly into my mouth!!!

It hit the back of my mouth - still travelling at speed - just in the soft part at teh start of my throat

At first I thought I had been stung - certainly spiked/stabbed to a very small extent

which is rather worrying because a swelling just there could be serious!!

anyway - that was well over an hour ago and I'm not dead yet so it is just a pain

but **** me - chances of that - especially on a cold day when insects are supposed to be either dead or hibernating!!!

You will be getting Mo jealous with a ride profile like that.

Getting old but not past it
House sold and new one bought. No chain involved as ours is a cash buy and the one we are buying is empty so it is up to solicitors to do their bit now. We are expecting to move possibly end of January. The garage in the new house is 6 metres long and 2.5 metres wide so big enough for my bikes on one side and a workshop on the other. It has power too. Something to look forward to now and I hope Molly likes it.

I’ve just started reading Beryl in search of Britains Greatest Athlete. The first chapters are about the start of her cycling with Morley Cycling Club. This was at a time when club runs were mostly all day runs Lunch was sandwiches carried in the saddle bag at a CTC appointed cafe A giant pot of tea was purchased along with a slice of cake.Tea would be a another cyclist cafe.

Club runs could be up too a 100 or more miles

Reading the first chapters reminded me of the time I started cycling .Hasten to add not with the success Beryl had.I started cycling back in 1955 with the Loughborough section of theCTC Summer club runs could be any where between 70 and 100 miles Later I also joined the Soar Valley Road Club not because I had any racing ambitions but because the club room was over the pub that brewed their own beer.I did ride the road clubs evening. 10 TT My only concession to aero dynamics was to remove my mudguards.
I don’t currently ride with a club.As far as i can tell the current club scene is very different..
Club runs would always have destination eg Tissington Well Dressing.Buxton Trentham Gardens .Youth Hostel weekends .

Cycle Rallies were a feature annually I met Eileen Sheridan at a rally at Matlock.
I feel very fortunate to have been part of the club scene between the mid fifties to the early seventies.
I probably come across as a dinosaur I know times change but what was a simple sport has become very technical .Cycling magazines indicate that bikes for commuting etc etc are needed to be a proper cyclist
I am quite happy in my advancing years to ride the bikes that I have owned for the the last fifteen years No cables that disappear into the darkest recesses of the frame No disk brakes or electronic gear shifting .I do like integrated brake and gear levers What I don t miss are the old cotter pin.
cranks Toe clips.

One thing that Jeremy Wilson mention the increase in the development of technical cycling clothing The photo on the front of the book shows Beryl in a sweater. My cycling attire of that period was ordinary shorts worn with under pants tea shirts in summer ,sweaters tracking bottoms Green Spot Nomad jacket. I Googled Green Spot jacket What came up was Original Green Spot has gone technical fabric £300 you’ve got to be having a laugh 😂

Here endeth the memory’s of an ageing cyclist

I read that book last year when it came out.
I found it an intriguing read, and quite poignant.
