Moral dilemma.

Relatively well-off couple can legitimately claim State aid even though they don't really need the money.

What would you do?

Please just answer the question (if indeed, you want to answer at all!) with a bit of optional rationale - just trying to avoid an NCAP style debate!

I would claim it as the only state aid that isn’t means tested would be health related.

I claim everything were entitled to.

We've paid enough tax over the years so ive no qualms on that score.

After my accident I had to live off state aid, it was either that or a park bench
and 36 years later, I'm still on housing benefit and industrial (retirement) injurys benefit.
If we were not entitled to it they wouldn't give it to you.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

You worked for it,earned it, so why not claim it.

We spent four hours wandering around the Southbank today, lots to see and enjoy. We visited Borough Market which is renowned for food of every kind. It was clear which stalls had the big reputations, the queues were huge. It's a good thing we had a late breakfast and avoided serious temptation.

It was The Great River Race on the Thames. A new thing for me. Over 300 boats, I hesitate to say rowing boats because although propelled with oars the boats aren't little rowing boats. Does that make sense. Crews were fours or eights. Some were clearly extremely good, others just there for the taking part. The route is Millwall to Richmond - 21.6 miles, a rowing marathon!! 😲 I can't imagine that.

Next stop The Courtauld Gallery. Housed in the magnificent Somerset House. I wasn't looking forward to this. How wrong I was! A fabulous collection of impressionist - Cezanne, Monet, Van Gogh, and Seurat. He's a new name for me. I loved his paintings.

I'm not a great art person. What made this visit special was each masterpiece was accompanied by a brief, clear explanation of what one is looking at. This made such a difference. Great visit.

There's a big Renaissance collection, a very important one, but it's just not my thing. An excellent display of pottery, for want of a better word, which I really enjoyed. Again great explanations.

If it’s there to legitimately claim, then claim it.

If you have no need of it then give it to your preferred worthy cause by all means

It is an interesting question because it sounds clear but isn't

it is a bit like "should you give to charity every month"
I do - but without me my wife would not - she would save it and spend it on family

and the question of "you paid the tax so you should claim it" falls down when you ask about a millionaire with a yacht benefits

of course - AN answer is that the millionaire should not be entitled to them
BUT they paid the tax as well - probably more buts that gets to proper "The Other Place" type thing
so they should be able to claim it
but they don;t need it so should we all pay for it
and if they do claim it and then give it to a charity - is that OK
because they get to select the charity based on their priorities and not those of "The People"

but one thing is clear

next year we are both claiming Old Age Pension - we paid the tax so we are claiming it

a year late!!!

It has been a truly horrible day today weather-wise and it still is. The rain never stopped.
Hopefully, no rain is forecasted for tomorrow.
We are going to Settle, in Yorkshire on Monday as Mrs G has a school reunion.
The weather looks good then so I will take my bike and go for a ride whilst she reminices with her old school friends.
I have never ridden in Yorkshire so it will be a first for me.

Don't forget the local bylaws, all cyclists must wear flat caps.

If anyone here, or someone you know, wishes to voluntarily pay some extra tax, here's the first point of contact with HMRC

accountsreceivable@hmtreasury.gov.uk

Hope this helps 😁

Second moral question

WOuld you pay extra tax if you can afford it
or keep it and give it to a charity of your choice
and maybe - another question - which one

personally - I would give it to the local FoodBank
I personally think they should be abolished
but I would do it by arranging society so that no-one ever needed them - in the meantime........
(p.s. I have no idea how to accomplish that!!)
