Probably said this before but for a number of reasons I had a wonderful cycling holiday in Mallorca (I still call it Majorca).
Based in Pollenca.....Great seafront hotel.
Myself and a good mate.
Good cycling, good food, good memories.
A little story. Keep in mind I was never a long distance cyclist so we would do, maybe, 50 milers each day, combined with sightseeing.
One day we had just completed 55 miles and were enjoying a pint in the Red Rum (well known to Brits) when along came a group of 'proper' cyclists ie club kit etc (and they were also our age). One of them was asking about our ride and was truly gobsmacked when I mentioned 55 miles........they only managed 35.
35 is just a warm up to Chorley Paul and others.
it made me feel quite good.
I don't think you should do yourself down on this. I'd say a 50/55 miler is a decent ride. 👏👏
Mine are longer because I have a round trip of 12 - 20 miles to our various meet points. Yesterday's planned route was 47/4000 feet but I had to add 20 to get there and back. Some days I crawl the ride home, we all do when the buzz suddenly disappears. The climbing was hard, I'm still not fully fit. Yes, I can still knock out 120+ in a day but these are big days out with my buddies, sandwiches, coffee, shoot the breeze. It's really about three old friends having fun.
We can all ride much harder but choose not to. One of my buddies is still on 400/500 km audax rides. He's crazy. I don't understand how he keeps his head together on these.
When the devil takes us we head out on a club ride to show the youngsters how it's done.
I say well done, Dave.
