So tell me (i am a technophobe).....if I have this down loaded then find i'm in a situation.......what steps do I take?

Tell whichever emergency service you contact the three words the app gives you & they know exactly where you are without you having to try & explain using pubs, road names or landmarks etc.

Give it a go and see which words it chooses (best not post them here or some of the ladies might start queuing up at the door!)

Edit: The RAC, too, asked for it when I had a car problem.

Mornng.
Summer is over then. Bit grey and some rain forecast but nothing too bad.

As for what3words, some delivery companies use it to locate address etc although main application is for emergency situations.
I've got it on phone, super easy. Install app and and just open it and it'll show your location with three words(obvs).

Example cat.sat.mat so if say you had an accident somewhere remote you call 999 or whatever tell them the 3 words and they'll know exactly where you are. Of course needs phone signal to do this.

You can practice at home, watch how the 3 words change as you walk just a few metres.

Morning strangers!
What have I missed?
Long run back from the Alps broken by a visit to the very quaint “Village of Yesteryear” museum in Saint Quentin. Worth a visit if you’re travelling past. Funny to discover my first moped - a funky orange Mobylette - was born there back in the 70s 😜
Shame the weather couldn’t hold on: we have a big family party at the weekend for our lad’s 30th, & I’m in charge of pizza cooking….might need to get the gazebo out tomorrow 🫣
Have a nice day 🙏

I had that but it kept giving me different words 😆

I would be cautious with the " what 3 words " app as it is inherently flawed, contains homophones/ plurals etc, and is susceptible to mispronunciation, regional accents etc.
There are several articles that have pointed this out, here's one of many.

I had personal experience of this when I fell and suffered an immobilising fracture. An ambulance was called and given the " what 3 Words " identification but turned up in the wrong location. It was finally resolved with the correct location being radioed through to the ambulance which arrived half an hour later.

Morning folks :okay: almost came a cropper yesterday! i was 'hovering' with feet in toe clips waiting for a motorhome to pass before joining the road, what i didnt see was a car a couple of feet off its bumper oops! i swerved [inelegantly] to avoid a collision. I could blame the impatient car driver glued to the back of the MH so i couldnt see it....but it was my mistake and its been noted n stored in my 'dont do stupid things and die' lists. :okay:

Yes but if you are capable of using what3words then you'd be capable of say sending a Whatsapp message to a family member/friend with what3words written out which would solve issue of pronounciation as a backup.

The two times I've used w3w in an emergency situation; once, the police despatcher pluralised a word I'd said; lane not lanes I corrected him. The other time there was no problem.
Overall, it's a good system even though it can be a bit flawed (what system isn't!?)

OS locate is probably better in off-piste situations, I reckon.

Given there is a distinct possibility of mispronounciation from someone in a stressful situation, injured/accident etc then I'd have thought 999 call handlers would or should be aware of that and given that w3w is quite widely used then you'd hope they ensure they got exact words otherwise as been said it could put location miles away.

Anyway, I've never had to use w3w for real but I think it's a good app to have just in case.

So tell me (i am a technophobe).....if I have this down loaded then find i'm in a situation.......what steps do I take?

Once it is downloaded and installed

then just start the "App" and its first thing is to tell you the location of where you are
so do this before you ring the whatever and read it out to them when they ask

It uses GPS - so no use in caves but pretty good anywhere else

I have heard complaints that sometime 2 similar sounding places are in the same area but this is very rare but just shows that you have to read it out carefully

I heard of one case in mountains where the mobile signal was so bad that the 999 people couldn;t understand what the people were saying and the call kept getting cut off.
They texted the what3words location and that got through and a helicopter that was looking for them found them a few minutes later

Four a very rude and tongue in cheek British version of " What 3 Words " there's the " Four King Words " website. As the name suggests it uses a string of four swear words to identify individual locations. Use it at your peril 😁
