My GP told me that in many instances being rude, or at least complaining loudly, works.
The squeaky wheel get the oil.

Same in every industry, the most undeserving complainers get treated well just to get rid.

I get annoyed when these people don’t realise they are getting special treatment and still continue to complain.

Many moons ago, we used to have a customer who complained about everything, seldom with any justification, and who we bust a gut trying to please - we genuinely went above and beyond on a couple of occasions knowing what they'd be like.
However, whatever we did wasn't good enough and the customer concerned loved to play to the room loudly telling other customers and anyone who'd listen how badly they'd been treated.

The day my then boss came out of his office on hearing yet another episode of playing to the room getting underway, introduced himself to everyone present and politely told the customer that given their opinion it would be best if this was the last time we did any work for them and not to call us again as he escorted them out of the door was a very special day. ^_^

Many moons ago I was at a ferry terminal in Newhaven with my mate and our two fully loaded touring bikes waiting to cross the channel. There was a fair breeze that day and the incoming ferry was delayed and as the day wore on and our departure time was forever pushed back as the storm increased, peoples tempers got more and more frayed. The poor women on the desk could only pass on what they were being told, as behind the scenes the ferry crew kept prevaricating about wether it was safe t set off. Meanwhile other passengers were getting more and more abusive and angry.

The whole time me and my mate just sat there relaxed by our bikes watching the world go by and resigned to our wait, there really was no point in being rude to any one. Eventually at four O'Clock we trotted of to get some grub from a nearby supermarket, we returned after half an hour to an empty terminal. Upon inquiring as to what was happening we were told that the ferry had eventually been cancelled and we would be able to travel the next morning.

No bother we say, could we possible kip here on the floor of the terminal, we'll be no bother. The lady said sorry, but then said because we had been so nice and polite with her all day that she would find us a B & B. So she got on the phone and proceeded to ring around to find us some overnight accommodation which was pad for by the ferry company, she even gave us 50 quid to spend on some food!

It can sometimes be that different folk get different responses from the same person.
My wife has told me a good few times how rude a post office counter worker is, she says everyone she knows can' stand her..they just don' understand how she gets away with it.
One day I had to go there...i treat people with respect until I have reason not to...i approached the counter with the dreaded member of staff....gave her a cheery good morning and it almost seemed to shock her....she looked up, beamed, and said..goood morning to you too.

I suspect she probably is a dragon, but that' not reason not to even try to be civil. Sometimes it works....

I was talking to a colleague today, his wife works in an M&S food hall. The Christmas rudeness has already started with people ranting about wanting to collect their order at early o'clock on Christmas Eve.

Some customers are becoming irate when they learn that Sunday trading hours will apply as it's a Sunday. They're pointing them in the direction of the government.
Always a bad day to work in a shop, especially when you've had to get in early for a delivery.

You have it good. Our local surgery has the rudest individuals ever on reception. I’m sure they are trained to be surly and awkward. I rarely go down there because of this and the ‘types’ in the surgery. The doctor has said to me 80% don’t need to be there clogging up the system. All locals, young and old, British thumb twiddlers. Most are very antisocial and haven’t ever learned the meaning of basic manners so really, no wonder the reception staff behave the way they do.
