Never replace a Volvo water pump unless it's rough and needs doing*, and if you do, only ever use a genuine Volvo replacement, never an aftermarket one.
You are a wise and benevolent God.
Volvo water pumps are superbly over engineered with stainless impeller ans SKF bearings. Failure is practically unheard of.
And then owners, or ignorant garages, think theyre being clever by replacing the pump with an aftermarket one simply because themoriginal is old, which practically guarantees trouble.
I'm far from an expert, but my Dad was an engineer and metalurgist with an MSc in each, working at first for Vanwall F1 team, then in the oil industry and latterly in CNC machine tool design. His Dad was in turn works manager for Lancia in the UK from the mid 60s until the late 70s. They were both firmly of the opinion that a man should know how to maintain and repair his own transport and I was thoroughly indoctrinated from a young age. Early summer holiday lessons from Gramps included being taught to strip and reassemble an SA 3 speed hub, and then changing the HG on his Series II landy while he supervised and talked me through the job. I was still only 7 or 8.
And that stood me in good stead throughout my life.
I've been in the Volvo scene on and off for 40 years, having learned to drive in my Dad's 240 estate and then having one of my own as my second car, and its the
knowledge gained along the way that is invaluable, exactly as Boney suggests. I still do most of my Volvo work, but at 58, very tall and with a knackered hip and only partial feeling in one hand I'm now more inclined to farm some of the work out to others rather than crwal about under the car. The difference is I know to find a garage that also knows what they're doing and also have the knowledge. When we moved and I decided to try the local all-makes independent I was giving them firm instructions about how I wanted the job done and the bloke said to me, "don't worry, I'm an ex Volvo master tech. I was raised on the P80's, I know them backwards and still have all my original Volvo training reference material." I nearly cried tears of relief and joy that I had found a man worthy to lay his hands upon my loved one.
