It's official. I'm rubbish at hills. Understandable coming from Norfolk I guess but today was our first ever venture anywhere hilly. Did ok on the whole but completely beaten by one hill and had to get off and walk. Deflated. But hey ho. Tomorrows another day. If I can move my legs in the morning that is.

You learn to love them when you on the edge of Peak District but it takes time.......and some of them can be mmmmm challenging.

Ah, but which hill beat you? We have some particular nasties here in the Peak.

If I have one tip, it is select a low gear, and spin. Once you can't spin at about 90, then just get your head down and crank it out. Taking some sugar at the bottom can help too.

There is a cup of tea waiting for you in SK23.

my friend and i always managed to stop at the bottom of hills with our energy gels and drinks and then not stop till safely over the other side! lol.

sometimes they do get easier with time, once you get up them then you just get faster

Coming from Sheffield on A57 there's a left turn up what I think is called Lodge Lane. Takes you to Ringinglow from the Rivelin valley. Nice 20 mile loop this afternoon but that hill was a killer. Started off ok but then just couldn't turn the pedals. Not enough gears or power in the legs And hope the tea is decaf.

I cycle on Dartmoor with a friend that does it every weekend. The terrain is slightly different to here in Cambs, He finds it tough, but is quicker as he's more conditioned to it.
Once you get "used" to it it's usually time to head back to the flatlands....

Lodge lane is ace. Not as good as conduit road though!

I live just off the top of Conduit Road and often pass people pushing their mountain bikes up it as I huff and puff past.

Lodge Lane is a good one but I usually end up taking the road over Strines Moor and then down to Ladybower to get out of Sheffield, good climbing and good descending!

[thread hijack] I know you will miss my ride in Rutland in June, and I am not sure where you are in Norfolk but we will be at Fakenham on Saturday for dr_pink's 100 mile time trial if you are interested in how other nutters ride their bikes, it is an eye opener.

This Saturday? Still in peaks I'm afraid but thanks for letting me know. We may be able to make the June Rutland ride after all as can't get time off work for the audax. I'll let you know in the other thread.

I love the peaks, I've been brought up riding in them. I'll be about that way, (Snake Pass) next week on the way over to Bakewell. I've a week off work so I'll be getting plenty of hills in next week. Strines? We call it Little Switzerland, it's a good challenge. We'll be Leek way sunday if anyones about

Awful day today. Nothing in the legs and only managed 15 miles. It seems every time we get on the bike this weekend it piddles down on us and what with the wind as well - I didn't have fun. I'm really worried about the Way of the Roses now. I have to keep saying - tomorrow is yet another day. Up and at em early on and hopefully with the sun shining it'll feel different. I know one thing though. I'm on a serious fitness mission from now on You lot who live amongst hills are hard buggers - including all the women I saw out today.

I just cycled up through Rainow and down through the Brickworks at Pott Shrigley and it was windy with very few cyclists out despite the sun breaking through.

IIRC Blake Street is near Conduit Road and a little bit steeper; (scenes from The Full Monty were shot there).

Proper tired me out going up there it did.
