When I was at school we had a school Scout Group (yes - one of those schools)
we could wear Scout uniform instead of school uniform on Mondays
and if we were doing camping stuff it was perfectly OK to have a knife on your belt
I used my Dad's old knife - deer foot with a 4 inch blade - it is currently upstairs by the computer
I suspect putting it on my belt and walking down the high street might cause problems

Scuba divers were harassed by the police here as all sensible divers have a sharp knife strapped to their leg. We were allowed to carry them concealed until just before entering the water. Overreaction and eventually we just ignored them and nothing further was said.

It was quite common to always carry a penknife in your pocket at one time.
