Hiding your profile page says to me that you are untrustworthy, you have something to hide, you are probably posting just to cause trouble. Would you trust somebody in the street concealing their identity with a full face balaclava ?

And some would say that is trolling

Actually it's the opposite, it's to stop trolls and creepy stalkers looking through your history and tracking where you have been.

...and of course the question is does this also include all those who hide their location on the Avatar

Look at the number using vague locations "South Coast", "Snoozing on the Sofa", "Logopolis" or have chosen not to display that information on the first page of this thread?

A rough calculation shows only 25% of posters give this information accurately, if at all

Are these also a symptom that shows these individuals also cannot be trusted, have something to hide or intent on trouble making

It is an individual's right to decide what is made public about them on a forum without being judged for that decision

Yes, of course. Just as it is also an individual's right to decide how much credibility to assign to a contributor to a forum based on what the contributor has chosen to share.

So lets take the post directly above yours

Would you consider Drago dishonest untrustworthy and of dubious credibility because he chooses to hide his location from us.

( also suspect that Drago is not really a dog)

On the internet no one knows you're a dog.

I always give false birthdays, usually something 5/5/55 or 7/7/77 . [/QUOTE]

So it was you! My birthday is 7/7, although unfortunately not 77 - significantly before then. While on holiday in Italy last year, I had two visits from the police (one a hammering on the hotel room door at gone midnight) because someone with a similar name and dob had done a runner with cash that wasn't his - there was an international warrant out for him!

Please hand yourself in to the authorities before I go on holiday again this year :-)

The profile information is part of the picture I can build up to establish my view of a poster. When a poster blocks my access to their profile I am suspicious of their motives on the forum. Happy ?

No never.Oh bugger i thought you meant....

It stops others seeing personal info such as birthdays and email addresses. I keep mine private as I value my privacy online. I don't do Facebook or Twitter either
You would be surprised how much you do reveal

We had this discussion a few years ago about privacy and risk

In that case (with permission) I was able to provide the individual with his address, pictures of his dog, kids house, wife, car and bikes

Imagine what someone with nefarious intent could do with that info

I have also seen one of my bikes on EBay using images from a "Show us your ...." thread

I'm very fortunate in that my real name is shared in full by an extremely famous person, so Googling me brings up quite literally millions of results about them. If there are any mentions of me, I've yet to be able to find them buried around the reams of info about my namesake. I'll be even safer this year when a feature film about their life is released
