Its also worth pointing out that a great many of us are waking around with a device that contains a camera, a microphone and an internet connection, constantly listening, everywhere we go.
Would that be like the first device in my list?

They could probably already do it via your mobile phone/tablet/laptop/Samsung TV*** etc.!

*** My Samsung smart TV has a microphone built in. Supposedly, some people want to tell their TVs what to do rather than use a manual remote control. The information from the mic is sent over the Internet for Samsung to work out what you said, and they then send back instructions to the TV ... Yeah, right! I turned that off as soon as I found out about it, but Wikileaks said that certain security agencies can secretly turn the mic back on!
Don't forget the front facing camera!

There to recognise hand gestures/movements rather than voice commands.
I'm talking Google Home and Amazon Echo. There appears to be a bit of a competition rush on. Both have dropped their prices recently, and both are releasing new models which are pretty cheap.

How long do I wait before I push the button? How real are the concerns about having electronic monitoring listening to everything that goes on in our house?
If you're trying before buying, ask them:-
"What is your purpose"
"Can you turn yourself off".
Or even
"Are you listening".

I love my Echo. Its the one piece of modern technology I really dig. Music, radio, news, weather, boil the kettle, switch then outside lights on...a real boon for Mrs D during those periods when her mobility isn't so good.

I have speakers in the ceiling and Alexa is connected to them via Bluetooth, so its like having HAL9000 in the house, albeit without the voice of Douglas Rain.
