i've really enjoyed my ride in to work on the mtb, despite the fact that it's stuck in an unsuitably low gear at the back and has knobbly tyres, which were only required for the first half km.

freed from the knowledge that i could/should go faster, it made for a very pleasant if not very fast ride.

would i spoil it by fixing the rear mech cable and fitting slicks?

Quite probably!;)

As a compromise, how about fitting slicks, but not inflating them to rock-hard levels?
