There's been much fettling today, part of which was fitting the trailer hitch. It's supposed to connect behind the wheel nut but it wont fit because the screws from the mudguard connector are too close so prevent the wheel nut screwing back on.

Any suggestions?

You could take the mudguard screws out, then fit the trailer hitch, then re-fit the mudguards - using cable ties if necessary if you can't get the screws back in.

We tried that, the mudguard screws and the hitch need to be in the same place.

What about cable tying the mudguard to the hitch, somewhere close to the normal position, as a temporary measure? You might need to move the stays at the mudguard end to get a reasonable fit with no rattling. You could also try a couple of p-clips further up the seat stay as a more permanent fitting for the mudguards.

Post a picture Sara: had similar problem, solved it by changing the angle of the hitch slightly down, it all fitted then. What kind of hitch is it?

This is the hitch:

Here's the problem:

When you put the hitch on, no matter which way round, it impedes on the space taken up by the black plastic part of the mudguard fitting directly above. Arrrghhhh! Cant see a solution, unless I can find a hitch with a smaller diameter around the hole.

Sorry if you have thought of this already...

Fit the mudguard to the pannier bolt?
P clip and fit the mudguard to the leg of the carrier?
Is there room to fit the mudguard inside the frame?

Hmmmm. The 2nd fitting in the picture is the pannier bolt. I don't think the mudguard and pannier would fit in the same hole.

I'm not sure about fitting the mudguard inside the frame, I'd presumed that its machined to only go on the outside. I'll think further about that.

A longer bolt with a washer between the rack leg and the mudguard, with another washer on the outside is a common fitting

The mud guard mount can go on from the other side. It's a wheel out job, but there's more then enough space on the non drive side.

Why would I need to take the wheel out? I was thinking I could just unscrew it and pop it over. I may be confused about what is being suggested.

I have a carrier and mudgards fitted to my bike and usually the same type hitch you have, I have a couple of concave washers from a set of cheap caliper brakes fitted between the bike and the carrier mounts, although I do like Lanzecki's idea
