It's been three years since I last took a bike on a train, but why is the reservation process still so painful?

Great Western Railway now offers bike reservation during the purchase of tickets on their site, but it doesn't work and doesn't explain why.

I was already 50/50 about taking my ebike to Center Parcs this time instead of hiring one of theirs like the last couple of times, to go riding the lanes/hills I used to do on my road bike before long covid, but this agro sealed the deal...

I'm hiring again, £75 for the four night stay, once/if battery gets near to 20% left, the bike centre will happily swap it out for a fully charged one.

Use of ISO incorrectly. Sorry I see the use of ISO a new watch means "International Organization for Standardization (for English speakers) a new watch" that makes no sense. Internet slang says "in search of a new watch" makes sense but due to longer and wider use of ISO for the standards body means that is the single meaning it should have. I know this is trivial and this might have gone into that trivial thread if I had found it first, but IMHO it annoys me this new internet slang use and I wish I could end it completely.

PS I work in ISO standards as part of my work (compliance side that is), so for me the real ISO is very important.

Hand driers full stop. I miss the old cloth loop ones, they were more civilised.

We still have those, although not that often.

You get charged a booking fee, but Trainline let you reserve bikes when booking tickets, downside is you can't then have them electronically, you need to print them off at a station before travel.

people who have no clue how wide their car is

Went to pharmacy this morning and there were a few cars parked outside the entrance - which is annoying in itself
OK some need to let people out who have trouble walking
but some just stay there

anyway - as usual in the morning it was chaos

there was a car reverse parking at the far end of the stretch of car park
and several cars were wainging behind it

AND a couple of cars wanted to leave the car park - which woul dhelp and make space

BUT - when I pulled over just past the cars by the entrance - the front can coming out just stayed where they were
there was litelly room to get a double deckes bus through that space!!!

but no - he just stayed there
I managed to move forward and left even more but they still just stayed there
at this point you could have got a double decker bus through and still leave room for a bike at the side!!

anyway - after a while the reverse parker was done and people moved forward a bit and I pulled forward
so the car coule then get through the gap as there was now room for a fully loaded 747 to take off through it

I may be exagerating
but that gap was big enough for him to get through with FEET to spare!!!

Saw an example last year when a double decker drove through a gap and the driver of the car following decided they couldn't fit. 🤔

I have the opposite problem here...

I can be out on my bike on a narrow road, passing parked cars, and with oncoming traffic. There is barely room for even a cyclist to overtake me but inevitably some stupid and/or aggressive driver goes for it anyway!

50% of the time they scrape past then swerve in front of me to avoid a head on collision.

Alternatively, they realise that they are not going to make it, brake, and swerve in behind me. I have even had prize idiots brake to a halt on the wrong side of the road and block off the oncoming traffic, which does not impress the other drivers...

I can't remember how many different outbound and return variations I tried over the weekend, but Trainline just like GWR said no bike reservation possible for my specific dates.

Maybe they're really popular dates for some reason, but in the past, I've had no issue with reserving bikes by popping to a local train station that has a human ticket operator present.

But I'm quite happy hiring a premium MTB ebike again, not sure the weather will be dry this time, the MTB has at least twice the battery capacity of my gravel ebike plus I don't have to be paranoid on the train etc.

Maybe I'll try taking my ebike next time.

You can't say that is "incorrect" use, it is perfectly acceptable use.

You don't like it, fair enough, but that does not mean it is incorrect. There are huge numbers of abbreviations which have multiple meanings, and that is just one of them.

Using the "In Search Of" meaning, it will always be pretty obvious from the context that they are not talking about standards.
