Why did you slow down so much whilst the car was at least 50 yards away from the junction? Going by the video, it looks like you had plenty of time to turn/continue straight.
I dont understand the point of the video. You could say that you should have given way at the end of the cycle lane.

I didn't have time.
I slowed down because he was actually going fairly quickly, and I could tell that he was going to turn in no matter where I was. I decided I didn't want to be run over.

I don't understand the point of your comment.

That's a strange looking junction layout, do the give way markings in the cycle lane indicate you should give way to traffic from the right and the left or just the right?

Your guess is as good as mine.
They pulled the traffic give way line back, which is good, but didn't logically follow through on that by continuing the cycle lane straight through. Still, as a red route it's TfL so what do you expect?

It did look like at 4 seconds in you stopped and this possibly gave the impression to the motorist that you were waiting for him.

I would agree that it looks like a crap junction.

Those markings look stupid! If you were to cycle on the correct side of the cycle lane and follow the markings, you would be cycling along the main carriageway on the wrong side of the road against the traffic as you passed the junction! Or am I missing something?

Well, from looking at your film, for cyclists going in your direction there are give-way markings at the end of the cycle-lane - although at the junction you moved over to the side of the cycle-lane for cyclist travelling in the opposite direction to you.

It then looks like you moved out across the major road, ie you weren't actually crossing, ie in, the side road as the car approached but a little bit in front of it?

Yes, the layout is crap, and common sense prevailed - but I wouldn't berate the car driver for not giving way to you.

I don't think it is good, Ben.

If the give way lines had been at the end of the road, you would have been in the side road and the A3 should have allowed your progress. By moving the lines back like that, they have put you in the main carriageway cycling against the traffic.

I wonder what the traffic planner who put that junction together was thinking. +1 to Alien8.

A217.

You're not actually in the main carriageway, but in a gap between the side road's give way line and the left hand side of the carriageway.

What they should do is leave the side road give way line where it is, get rid of the cyclist's give way markings, put signage up warning drivers in the side road of crossing cyclists. Then put an additional give way line on the carriageway side to apply to drivers turning into the side road.

Was he turning into a side road? Yes.
Does the HC state you should give way to people already crossing the side road? Yes.

Looks like a garbage layout. Counter to the flow of other traffic?? and strictly speaking... the 'obstruction' wasn't beyond the drivers give way line?

I hate cycle lanes

Something like this from Denmark would be more suitable. (flip for UK equivalent)

Yes, you're quite right about what the HC states.

I was just asking what side of the line you were?

It's no big deal - it's not like I've even asked whether you were pushing your bike, ie in the role of pedestrian, when you (allegedly) crossed the side road.

What does it matter which side of the line I was? Are you saying that if I had moved well to the right, behind the side road's give way line, this driver was in the wrong, but as I carried on in the cycle lane he wasn't?

Here's the streetview from the driver's point of view. http://g.co/maps/tmmc4

Regardless of exactly where the line is, he should give way to people who have already started to cross when he turns into that side road.
