They do seem to becoming a bit like razors, don't they!? Ever increasing numbers of blades/cogs.
Maybe they'll start having a lubricating strip at the beginning and end of the range soon.

Looks good. After swapping my compact double, for a single 40t, running with normal 9 cassette and RD, I would agree with the thoughts that doubles are now a relic of the past.

How is the alignment of the chain going to be affected with a single front chainring when it has to run across 12 rear cogs?

If the single front chainring is assembled so that it is in the middle of the rear cogs it should be able to handle six rear cogs either side of the chainring alignment.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never use small/small

Also in a single ring you would set it up so the single ring is were the middle of that front triple is......with no front dereauiler to worry about the chain aligns smoothly accross all 10/11/12 rear cogs.

Throw in a clutched rear mech and you get even smoother changes due to no chain slap...

Looks like a good idea. Racing cyclists will still want a double front to keep the ratios as close as possible, but for most other riders getting rid of the front mech and still keeping a useable spread of gears will be an advantage.

I get it for mud pluggers, front mechs can be a PITA in muddy conditions, but road riders? Not so convinced.

Ha ha - a mate was telling me only yesterday that he had been astonished to spot an 11 speed MTB with a 10-42 cassette. I texted him the details of this new setup and his gob is well smacked!
