Hi I have a gaunt from 2016 which has ultegra shifters and rear meck. I would like to change the front meck and chain rings to ultegra. But am getting confused with model numbers. Is it fc 6800 for the crank set and not sure about the front meck. Are the the ones from 2016 or would the newer ones be ok to up grade to

Thanks Dave

If it's 2016 and 11 speed it'll be Ultegra 6800. Mid 2017 onwards moved to Ultegra 8000 and 10 speed is 6700.

Front mech-wise there's little difference, although I'm about to put on sale an almost new 6800 band-on front mech (being replaced with Dura-Ace).

It's the crankset which will be quite a bit lighter. And more expensive.

Ok cool so look for 6800 if I can find old stock or is the 8000 a lot better?

6800 is fine and I'd suggest stick with a 6800 front derailleur if you really want to change it.

An 8000 crankset / chainset will be a bit better, but more expensive. I'm presuming the crankset is Shimano already? If not you may need a new bottom bracket as well.

Yer it is but u not sure which one it’s not 105. So guessing a big standar one. The front meck is 105 same as cassette. So would ideally like to change front meck crank set and cassette. So I would be looking for 6800 for them are they still available as old stock would u know.

@dave147 - has the crankset got Shimano written on it? If so it'll almost certainly be a Hollowtech II bottom bracket which is fine. The model is written on the inside of the cranks along with the length - that matters.

At a guess you've got a Giant Defy 0 from 2016? (spec. at: https://www.giant-bicycles.com/gb/defy-0-2016 ) If so the crankset's got Shimano R500 written on the inside of the arm. You can swap that for Ultegra easily if you've the correct tool.

Shimano 6800 is still available, often discounted. 8000 will be about 20-30% more expensive.

Yep defy 0 think I will look in to the 6800 as they will be a gud upgrade from
What’s on. Will have to c if the difference between the 6800 to the 8000 is worth the 20-30% what r ur options on it

Couple of reasons I wud like it to be all the same group set. And to be the best I can afford. Not that fussed about looks just wud like to improve the bike a bit really. The bits look like the won’t cost loads apart from
The crankset. I cudnt justifies going to dura ace or even ultegra di2 even if I wanted as the cost is far to hi. Just wud like a nice bike. I like every thing else about it

Just weighing up if to go for 6800 bits as wud match shifters and tear meck if I can get them or the newer 8000 bits if every thing will work together. From the looks of it the front meck and cassette aren’t to different in price just the cranksets that seams to be about 60-80 more experience

Get a 105 or Sram one, makes little difference surely. Like chains, the cassette is a consumable
I don’t mind getting the newer ultegra cassette as I want to put the old one on to my old rear wheel for my turbo trainer that’s if the new model ultegra will work on my bike
