ME! The Swiss civil defence sold off a lot of them in the late 80's and even I could have afforded one, just not the running costs.

We used to hire one that had been adapted and a 30m boom stuck onto it for Line of Sight surveys in hard to get to places, awesome piece of kit!

Made a mess though if you did get it stuck.

Absolutely love them and G-Wagons ( not the chavvy fooseballer versions)

I agree, I’d love an early SWB on steel wheels.

How does it compare to its cold war rival the Russian UAZ-452 or "Loaf of Bread". Originally produced in 1965, subsequent models have been updated to include steering, brakes and other mod cons.

i nearly bought one of those! I didn’t have a car at the time, and had been green leaning in my RangeRover.
It was very close to making the decision and then I saw this.....

which I bought.
I collected it from Finsbury Park on a Friday afternoon, my first time driving LHD, 60 miles back home.
Great fun, but I had to sell it as I had a 25 mile each-way commute, so just under 4 gallons a day 😂

My father-in-law was an instructor on the 'Stolly', when he was serving, in the Army & based in Germany

I also know a guy (Mike) who built from scratch, a working model of one (& a Saladin)
From memory, he worked the dimensions from the best available wheels/tyres he could source at the time

Co-incidentally, given the reason we're all on this site, he's married to Barry Hobans sister!

All taken at the 'Fleur de Lys' Classic Vehicle Show, in Thornes Park (Wakefield) in July 2005
