I never push my luck with any fish or shellfish foods. With bacon, I'm fearless.

Your nose should tell you.

I mean my rule of thumb anyway is the date on something is just a guideline, it doesnt instantly spoil or is unsafe to eat the moment midnight passes, theres a few days grace before something goes off, sometimes longer depending on the product.

fish I dont risk the most beyond an expiry date, just because Im wary with seafood spoiling, it bugs me insanely theres a local market I know who have a fishmongers that claims to sell fresh fish caught from the local seaside, but all their stuff smells of fish...and thats the point fresh fish doesnt have that fishy smell, that fishy smell is the smell of the bacteria that comes from the decay and spoiling of the fish.

with meat it is smell mostly, and the texture, though sainsburys do this sliced cooked chicken packet, I occassionally use as a sandwich filler, its of course injected with lots of water to bulk it up which means its also horrible and slimy too, so its not their finest quality stuff shall we say, but you open the packet and it always smells off even when its still well in date, the texture as I say is all wrong too, so its giving you this meat is off vibes, and yet seems to be completely ok, but god knows what it smells like if its actually off, and I dont intend to find out with that one.

but I have a jar of Bratwurst I bought from Lidl a year ago, it has no date on it, Im kind of curious if its still edible but reluctant to throw it out as I believe it is edible still as theyre supposed to be pasteurised and its sealed, and been kept in brine, but it might literally be once I pop it open, eat within 2 days kind of experience

maybe Ill save it for a Halloween party, eat the food of the damned with no expiry date if you dare...
