ok, so there's no such thing as road tax, road maintenance/building is funded from general taxation, and VED is a .......... a what exactly? From whatever source, I seem to "know" that it's a duty levied on motorists based on the level of emmisions of the vehicles they drive.

I've been looking at DVLA site, Directgov site and googling to find a legitimate source for this (not that I don't consider CC as a legitimate source!), it's still refered to as car tax/road tax, and there doesn't seem to be an explaination of what it's based on. Can anyone direct me to a relevant source please?

much appreciated.

I know, and I've read many of them. What I'm looking for is an official source for it. What I'm finding is How to Tax your vehicle, car Tax rules, how to apply for a Tax disc, etc etc etc I'm looking for a source for what is commonly accepted on here.

Just because it's commonly accepted by CC, it doesn't necessarily make it right. I've seen it written here frequently, I've never seen a reference to any official source though.

The DirectGov website shows that the cost of VED/Car Tax for a car registered after March 2001 increase as the listed CO2 emmissions of the vehicle increase. So it increases in line with the polution caused by running the vehicle. It doesn't take into account polution caused by the production or probable disposal although I suppose fuel tax catches the economical vs non-economical driver element.

As for what it pays for; like fuel taxes, it goes into the coffers of the Exchequer and as such it would be a costly and almost impossible task to directly allocate VED to a specific expenditure accurately. So while it helps pay for road infrastructure, so does income tax.

As a point of interest - when looking round the direct gov site, I think I'm correct in say the phrase 'road tax' only appear when directing you to the vehicle tax pages. Once you are in, it's refered to a vehicle tax or car tax (or the vehicular equivalent).

Also, it would be wrong to assume that cyclist pay road tax at a zero rate as tax exempt vehicles still have to show a tax disc.

Anyone know a link for a summary view of the numbers, sort of:-

VED generates £XXX
General Roads cost £XXX
Motorways and restricted roads cost £XXX

just curious

Although this would not include externals, such as traffic damage to buildings, increased cost of Policing, including general policing as well as specific traffic offences, and global effects of cars. Which should be included if you are arguing a free-market approach to taxation.
