Thanks everyone for your replies. One other thing: the device only came with one out front mount and
@Glasgow44 don't over complicate this very simple procedure. I get the feeling you could be heading that way. The major benefit of Wahoo is its simplicity.
  • Choose your preferred route planner(s) and create accounts with them.
  • On your phone install the Wahoo Elemnt app
  • In the Wahoo Elemnt app go to "Profile" >"Autorised Apps" >select the app you wish to authorise > follow the instructions
Once #2 is completed
  • Any route you create will automatically show under "Routes" in the Wahoo Elemnt app
  • Any route you create will appear on the Wahoo Bolt but you need to sync the Bolt after creating a new route
To load and use a route you have three choices:
  • In the Elemnt app go to "Routes" scroll through and choose the route you want to use. On the top bar there is a search facility which can be very useful. Select the route and it will load on to the Bolt in seconds
  • On the Bolt go to "Routes" and use the buttons to scroll up and down to choose the route. I find this a bit fiddly
  • If you have a GPX file, a Route, which has been sent to you and you have not added to your route planner do this.
  • In the Elemnt app go to "Routes"
  • In the bottom right corner click the blue +
  • Choose "Import from file"
  • Follow the onscreen instructions.
That is all you need to do and in my view is by far the simplest approach. There are other approaches, many of them hangovers from the days when getting routes on to a Garmin was arduous. I regularly hear people chat about how they do abc, xyz and wonder to myself why make it so complicated.

One thing you can do which may be of value is create "Starred" Routes. These will appear first on your Bolt. To do this in your chosen planner create what are essentially "Favourites" by whatever means the planner uses. The favourite will, after syncing, show as a starred route on the Bolt.

That is really helpful - thanks. Do I need a subscription with Strava etc to create routes?

Would you say that Komoot is better than Strava or much the same?
I've always struggled with Komoot though I know many people swear by it. I've never used Strava to route plan. The only time I use Strava is to export a ride and then turn it into a route using another planner.

My chosen route planner is RWGPS. It works very well for me and I always find it accurate.

I mostly use Strava for route planning - best done with a larger device, ideally a PC or Mac with a mouse if you want to drag the route to fit your own expectations. It’s easy to use and the route automatically appears in my linked Wahoo account (and thus on to the Bolt). The accounts are linked anyway to allow rides recorded on the Bolt to auto-sync to Strava (this is usually done before I have my helmet off at the end of a ride).

Cycle.travel is the route planner to rule them all - you can fit a small subscription use OS maps as well as being generally bob on.

You can use for free with OSM mapping.

Download as GPX then open in the wahoo app.

No. I use RWPS to plan my routes, and do not have a paid subscription

Hi there. I tried to use ridewithgps on the PC but its a bit of a pain. Everytime I drag the mouse along the route - it keeps putting way points all over the place - its like the mouse is very sensitive:

This is probably another silly question: I use my phone to record a route (I basically just start the route on Strava - non subscription) and it records the route. Does the Wahoo do the same or do you have to download a route first? I mean - can I just set it to record and ride and it records wherever I've ridden?

Yes, just press start and ride. When you press finish it will be available on the Elemnt app.

You can set it to automatically upload to strava (and other similar apps if desired) when you press finish if you want.
