Hi there

I've just recently bought a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt V2.

I've paired this with the following apps on my phone: Strava, RidewithGPS, Komoot and Relive.

How do I create and upload routes, etc and transfer routes that others have set up?

Open ridewithGPS or whichever on your computer.
Click plan route, do your planning.
Click save, click send to phone.
Open rwgps on your phone.
Click on the route you want.
Click navigate.
You can follow the map on your wahoo and you can have your phone give you a fanfare and a woman's voice telling you where to go. At each turn. Trouble is I mostly stuff the phone in my back pocket. When it's there I can't hear what she's saying.

You can do it a few ways:

Using the Wahoo or ELEMNT app on your phone; this will then sync with the head unit.

Using any of your connected accounts: RWGPS, Komoot, Strava, whatever.

You can also use a GPX file - open it in your ELEMNT app and then use it as a route.

I usually use Strava or RWGPS.

It's very simple. Plan in your chosen app. Sync your Wahoo and any routes you have created will be available on the Wahoo.

You don't need to send to phone, open in the planner app etc.

As everything is synced with your Wahoo you have two very simple options to select a route:
  • Open the Elemnt app
  • Select the route
  • The route will transfer and open on your Bolt
  • OR on the Bolt go to Routes
  • Scroll to your chosen route and select it
My preference is via the Elemnt app as it's searchable.......I have 200+ routes so search is a valuable option. The simplicity of loading routes is one of the big plusses for Wahoo.

How do I download/transfer a GPX file to the Elemnt app?

I plan a ride in Cycle.Travel, download as gpx, open in the Elemnt app, load route onto headset.

I believe you just need to pin a route in RWGPS and it’ll sync to your Wahoo.

Yes Cycle.Travel is a fantastic route planner. It’s run by Richard Fairhurst of this parish and is free to use, with extras available to subscribers. It tends to recommend quieter routes than some route planners and can be configured for only road or gravel routes. Available through website, which is how I use it, or as an app aimed primarily at those using it direct for phone navigation.

In the past I have received GPX files for organised rides by email. I just open the file on my iPhone and ‘send’ it to the ELEMNT app on my phone. Once there it opens as a route and you can use it as described above.

Or you can import the GPX file to your linked planner of choice.

@Glasgow44 don't over complicate this very simple procedure. I get the feeling you could be heading that way. The major benefit of Wahoo is its simplicity.
  • Choose your preferred route planner(s) and create accounts with them.
  • On your phone install the Wahoo Elemnt app
  • In the Wahoo Elemnt app go to "Profile" >"Autorised Apps" >select the app you wish to authorise > follow the instructions
Once #2 is completed
  • Any route you create will automatically show under "Routes" in the Wahoo Elemnt app
  • Any route you create will appear on the Wahoo Bolt but you need to sync the Bolt after creating a new route
To load and use a route you have three choices:
  • In the Elemnt app go to "Routes" scroll through and choose the route you want to use. On the top bar there is a search facility which can be very useful. Select the route and it will load on to the Bolt in seconds
  • On the Bolt go to "Routes" and use the buttons to scroll up and down to choose the route. I find this a bit fiddly
  • If you have a GPX file, a Route, which has been sent to you and you have not added to your route planner do this.
  • In the Elemnt app go to "Routes"
  • In the bottom right corner click the blue +
  • Choose "Import from file"
  • Follow the onscreen instructions.
That is all you need to do and in my view is by far the simplest approach. There are other approaches, many of them hangovers from the days when getting routes on to a Garmin was arduous. I regularly hear people chat about how they do abc, xyz and wonder to myself why make it so complicated.

One thing you can do which may be of value is create "Starred" Routes. These will appear first on your Bolt. To do this in your chosen planner create what are essentially "Favourites" by whatever means the planner uses. The favourite will, after syncing, show as a starred route on the Bolt.

I was under the impression that creating a route on Komoot specifically, you can’t send it to your Wahoo device unless you have a subscription??? Hope to be corrected.
