Slightly OT, but I reckon that the penalty for mobile phone use should be on the spot confiscation of the phone for 28 days with a £200 recovery fee at the end of it. They do similar for uninsured cars so it should be workable.

But then they just get a pay as you go ..for a few weeks..
Far better to confiscate their licence and car..so they cant hire a car either..
We do need to up the anti on phones and any social media distractions while driving ,they are the greatest threat to any road user.
I think work for nothing is a good way to hammer home the message,as that would really annoy a lot of people.so maybe 30hrs for first time..

Well apart from the public gawping at his private life aspect, he'll doubtless get banned for a year which'll be a pain to him as he'll no longer be able to swan around in his ferrari. OK he can afford a chauffeur, but still a punishment. I can afford trains and taxis but it would be a punishment to me

Rooney is quite a decent bloke by all accounts, well liked by his peers and has plenty of time for his fans. Let's be realistic here, footballers have good looking girls throwing themselves at them where ever they go and they are bound to succumb now and again like most of us would, including the foaming at the mouth moralists.
Drinking and driving is a bit naughty, but if everyone who had driven over the limit at some point was suddenly banged up for it there would be a lot fewer posters on CC for a little while. And I'm a fairly quiet sort of bloke, so I don't want to share a cell with Accy Cyclist....

Erm don't they have to wait till the blood alcohol results come back? I didnt realise suspicion of drink driving meant a custodial sentence or court and bail immediately.
