Sadly I'm definitely calling the bottom for this year - reaching around 69.7kg and 86cm waist earlier in the month; while it's now creeping slowly back up thanks to increased food intake (cold, stress) and less exercise (cold, dark, lack of time).
It's interesting to see how different this year's behaviour has been compared to last. Last year saw a fairly rapid drop from May, stalling in July and beginning to creep up again from August. Conversely this year the losses were slower (possibly due to fewer miles on the bike, the intake of fruit and yoghurt from the off, and/or just the fact I'm getting older / it's getting more difficult) however I've manage to sustain the weight loss until October this time and while I'm eating more I've not yet completely fallen off the wagon and got back onto the carbs wholesale.
The total amount lost has been about the same both years at c. 6.5kg; gaining about 4.5kg between August last year and April this year. I'm hoping that since I've managed to push the inflection point back into the year by a couple of months this time, all else being equal I shouldn't regain as much weight before circumstances become more conducive to further losses again in the spring. I'm also aware that smashing large amounts of home made flapjacks daily last winter didn't help..
While I'm not 100% happy about where I am currently I've made tangible progress and overall from the start last May (78.5kg) have gotten about 75% of the way to my target weight of c. 66kg. I've also gained a modest amount of muscle mass in this time and am probably close to being as fit, healthy and aesthetically content as I've ever been... just not quite at the point I want to be at just yet.
Over the winter the plan is to try and concentrate on the strength training and keeping my diet in check as much as possible, before hitting it again when the weather improves next year.
In other news I found recently that the average BMI for folks my age (and most people) in the UK is 28.. while it's common knowledge that the average UK citizen is classed as "overweight" getting an actual number brings home the grim reality.
Granted BMI is somewhat flawed / skewed by muscle mass (or lack thereof) however broad-strokes seems to give a reasonable macro view and in my case that would be a mass of around 88kg; more than I've ever been while I was conspicuously round / extremely unhappy at 86ish. A pretty sobering glimpse into the miserable state of the nation's health and I guess a welcome reminder that the reality for many is far, far lot worse than my trivial situation.
