Left work at 2am and as soon as I walked the bike out into the carpark, it felt as if I'd walked into a freezer.

Minus 5 degrees, but it felt colder.

Legs were sluggish and knees were aching inside with the cold, which slowed me down a bit and had the effect of chilling out further. Fingers and toes went numb and I longed for the heated grips I had fitted to my last motorbike.

I don't think it's going to be as cold tonight, but I'm putting thicker kit on just in case.

On the bright side, only a single car passed me, until I reached the cycle path alongside a dual carriageway heading in to Durham; and along with the clear skies and close to full moon, it was a lovely peaceful, if somewhat slippery ride back.

I didn't get on the bike today until 10am, still minus 5 here at that time. My hands were very cold and the roads glassy with ice. Still, it felt great to be on the bike. Here's hoping you have another clear starlit ride home tonight.
