I'm a 'front line' retail worker, so I guess I'll be going to work as usual. On the upside... I don't have to worry about paying my rent/bills, but on the downside... I'm in constant close proximity of several hundred random people everyday.
...and in light of this... apart from going to work, I've decided that it's probably wise to not visit or be visited by anyone i love for the foreseeable.

I just took an extended walk to Lidl and observed how some of our vulnerable local residents are handling their 'self-isolation'...

I saw two elderly couples (who looked in their late-70s) meet on the pavement in front of me and hug each other. "Ooh, it is ages since we last saw you! How are you doing? What do you think of this virus thing, eh? Isn't it terrible having to stay away from everyone!"

At the supermarket itself it was more a case of watching the old folk staring at empty shelves, wondering what to do...

On the way home I saw an old man crossing the road. A car drew up alongside him and the driver lowered his window. "Hey John, are you ok - I haven't seen you down the club for a while?" "Eh?" "I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU DOWN THE CLUB!" "It's no good, I can't hear you..." The old gent leaned inside the car and said hello to the driver, his partner, and their 2 young kids...

That’s a real bummer.

Thank you for putting up with the pressures and the daft/abusive customers to keep people supplied with what they need.
Thank you GC. To be fair, the vast majority of customers are great and openly supportive/thankful of us. We've not really had any abuse yet, a few daft and a bit grumpy ones mind. The police called in twice this morning... just checking up on us and assuring us that if we do have any hassle, they'll be there in a jiffy. They're doing the rounds in all local shops and supermarkets apparently.

Can't see the Brits complying. Car park at the local park full and a holiday atmosphere. Large groups, including elderly on my solo walk. View attachment 509196

The fines in France started on Monday (from €35 - €132) as there were so many people still out on the roads without the required permit (self filled in) then it was announced yesterday that the €132 fine will be applied in all cases. Last night the governor of the region of Lombardy made an announcement that people were still not respecting the "stay at home" policy and he warned of strict and harsh penalties as from this AM, a colleague who lives near Bergamo (now the worst affected area) said he would go out to the supermarket but nothing else although he agreed that even until yesterday people had been socialising too much.

We are also supposed to get a forced stay in rule either tomorrow or by the weekend so i assume no chance to use the bike after that.....

An additional argument that i heard from Italy is that people should avoid all activities that also may increase a strain on the health service ie if you ride your bike and fall off then an ambulance will have to come and scoop you up and it should have been helping someone without "self inflicted" injuries etc, slightly ambiguous i suppose but i see the logic.

We went to Lidl this AM and we now have the restrictions of how many people are allowed inside and we have to queue outside with a minimum 2m distance. Only food items can be purchased and the usual middle isles that are full of cheapo bargains are all sectioned off. It was the same at the pet store which was also open, you can buy pet food but all other items are off the menu.

I suppose it looks like the turbo trainer may have to come out again.... that subscription to FulGaz may actually be used this time:laugh:

I was talking to a couple of elderly people out earlier today. Both live on their own and adamant that they are going to carry on socialising and are not going to stay indoors and isolate themselves. The British tend to have quite a reactionary anti-authoritarian streak in them lurking below the surface - and don't tend to take kindly to being told what to do by anyone whose authority they don't respect as legitimate. I believe this was one of the factors contributing to the vote for Brexit - the EU just got up their noses and so will the UK govt if they try to restrict citizens personal liberties.

Can't see the French or Italians complying either. They generally just ignore any official regulations they disagree with as a matter of course.

But that means banning all forms of outdoor exercise including walking cause any of them could lead to needing an ambulance.

Right, the baby's got a cough and a temperature so it looks like we're in isolation. It's probably just a cold, he has been quite snotty. We're fairly well stocked for food so we'll be ok, but we are down to half a bottle of whisky.

If anyone happens to be passing through Sheffield, bring Laphroaig. Just leave it on the doorstep, I'll take it in.

Fully stocked with cider.
Dunkertons (of superdry fame?)
Gwatkins (daughters picked for him when pan lids)
Once opon a tree. Can't remember where they are.
Sanford orchards.
Ross-on-wye cider and Perry company
Buford organics.
ETC
