If the author was Sacha Baron-Cohen, I might agree with you. It was recommended to me by a psychologist, who, I am sure, knows what he is talking about.

No, but I've liked the Dostoevsky I've read - might be a little more digestible.

More recently written, Solzhenitsyn evokes the random cruelty of the soviet era with a sort of black humour that I found very readable. Cancer Ward, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, or the abridged version of the Gulag Archipelago are all good places to start.

My son read Crime & Punishment recently and said it was one of the best books he had ever read.

I remember Solzhenitsyn being in the news in the 70s when it was being reported he was being persecuted because of his writing that displeased the Soviet regime of that time. I may well give him a go. I will read C & P but will have to choose the right time.
