I would post a photo. However last night my computer epiclly failed and I have lost all my photos including those of my newborn and all my university work from the last 2 years. Really crap day that turned out to be. So kids just because nothing has ever gone wrong before back stuff up!

Yikes! I've got two things to say to that - (1) Bad luck! (2) Read my posts ...

Not my mistake, but a colleague once let out a horrified scream when the hard disk drive (HDD) on his company PC died, taking with it more than a year's worth of work which he hadn't backed up!

I think the company had to pay thousands of pounds to get the HDD rebuilt in a clean room by data recovery specialists ...

At least 3 other colleagues lost work due to dead HDDs. I lost quite a lot of data when my personal PC HDD failed.

REGULARLY BACK UP YOUR DATA, FOLKS!

Here's one of me when I was a little younger.
Moustaches and those sunnies will be back in fashion any day now!

Looks kind of Australian to me... "Look, I know Skippy's out there somewhere...p'raps he's hurt... or sha99ing a dingo or something"

Luckily I have some stuff on a sd card which we are taking to get developed which includes some newborn stuff in addition to some of our holiday snaps, still utterly gutted though. You live and learn!

Milo - sometimes you can get data off apparently dead drives. If the computer is just failing to boot, it could be just a very critical bit of the operating system that has been corrupted. Most of the data on the disk might be okay, and the mechansim of the drive might also be okay, in which case you could perhaps reinstall or repair the operating system without deleting all your data.

Is it a Windows PC? What does your computer do when you first switch it on? If it beeps, count them - the number of beeps can give you a clue to what is going on. Do you see any BIOS messages on the screen and if so what do they say?

I reformated so it be gone. I did try all I could do to save the data but I just could not get it to boot without a total format. I did not want to take it into the local pc guy due there being some pictures of me and my partner I would prefer were not seen....

Ah ...! It's a pity, because I was going to suggest that you try these steps.

I can see that having local PC guy checking out those photos might have caused a few problems back at home!

Shortly after digital cameras first came on the market, a colleague brought his old one in to work to sell, having just bought a new one. He passed the old camera round the office for people to play with, then someone asked if there was a way of viewing all of the pictures on the memory card. He told them how to do it and was discussing how much he wanted for the camera when suddenly he went scarlet and leapt forward, tearing the camera from the would-be buyer's grasp and feverishly stabbing his finger at the delete button until the memory card was empty. He wouldn't actually tell us what pictures had been on the camera, but it was pretty damn obvious!

(I wouldn't have trusted that delete function - it is often possible to undelete files later if you haven't overwritten the data in the mean time. I'd make doubly sure that there was nothing left to be undeleted by filling the card with something innocent!)

[Colin realises that it is nearly a month since his last backup! He starts the backup software and goes downstairs to cook a veggie curry!]

How does one do this? A separate HD?

I have nearly all my pics on web albums which is almost all I care about.
