If I am out with @potsy and @400bhp either a full English or a large slice of cake with a hot chocolate (with cream marshmallows and a flake on top).

If I am doing a 100k fast ride then a bannana and a 750 ml bottle with a electrolyte tab in water sweetened with a little squash. I tend to take more notice of my pre ride fuel. Set yourself up with a good breakfast. Porridge oats soaked overnight in skimmed milk with honey give an excellent slow release carb base.

For the north down being such a big run (1000 entries) it might be worth taking whatever you find works for you, with you. Theres no guarantee that A)the feed stop will have anything left or B)have what you've been training on.

I usually plan a stop in a long ride so usually have no shortage of potential food. I've had everything from scones to pancakes ,flapjack pieces to jelly babie, energy bars to energy gels.

The most important thing is use your training miles to figure it all out. What you like, the quantity and frequency. I have a time alert set on my garmin as a reminder to eat and drink.

ps: Im probably doing it too

Thanks for the info. tried fig rolls and lucozade sport today along with the malt loaf. had one food stop at 23 miles, on my 50 miler but reading your post it sounds like i should be eating wee bits and more often. felt a bit shattered at 40 miles, will do more experimenting on next weekends long ride.

And now i'll make sure i will have plenty to eat with me on the day to. Thanks for this.

It's another personal thing to experiement with really.Huge amount of food during a ride makes me feel sluggish so I work off little, often.

Figrolls and jelly babies are perfect for that

When I started, I was a bit obsessed with nutrition, and spent money on gels and energy bars and whatnot. Now I just have water, and whatever's in the cupboard when I set off. Did a 50 miler recently on two scones.

The fancy sport nutrition stuff is only really worth it if you're a competitive cyclist.

I've never eaten on a ride or felt the need. Been out for 4 hrs also (100km) but usual ride is about 44 miles.

That's good going. I once attempted a hilly 50 miler with only a small banana for company, and with two miles to go I bonked! Peripheral vision went, and I could barely keep the bike in a straight line!

last 100 mile ride....about 8 fig rolls, 1 (maybe 2) mule bars, and a banana.

that's pretty much it. I basicaly try to eat a single fig role every 30mins, and use the mule bar/bannana to break up the dullness of fig rolls

Yep, rare I manage to go out for a ride without stopping at a bar/pub. I won't touch jelly babies, therefore minimising my chances of catching mad cow disease. ^_^ Tbh, I don't eat or drink anything "special" to ride, not even on long tours.
