what do you put on your chain.

Mud mostly as far as I can tell

when I notice - and I must check as the paths were muddy when I last went out - it probably needs cleaning again

if I have a very muddy ride I hose the mud off everything with the hosepipe - including the chain and derailleur cogs where the main build up seems to happen

I have a plastic thingy that the china goes into and you wind it through some liquid in it
I use degreaser

then I put whatever lube I have around
until a few years ago I just used 3in1 and never had
I think the one I currently use is supposed to be for wet and dry conditions

I think as long as it has some kind of lube on it then that is OK as long as it is cleaned when it get mucky
some gather muck worse than other

Silca immersive wax. As above, everything stays clean. As a bonus, my chains and components last 3-4 times longer, but primarily it's about the bike and drivetrain having no oily dirt on them. Any grime from the road just rinses off. Overall, it's a lot less effort for a better result.

I've tended to use car engine oil, primarily because I had a gallon of the wrong grade for my car, so was happy to use the "Mickle method" whereby you clean the chain with the same oil then used for lubrication rather than washing it all out with solvent. Granted engine oil might not be perfect but for me it's not a challenging application in engineering terms thus any medium viscosity oil is likely fine, and oiled rather neglected is what is important

First I hear this! I wonder if a filtered old engine oil (or old but filtered cooking oil for that matter) also works...

Finish line ceramic. I've no idea if it's any better than anything else but it's what I've been using for years and a little bottle lasts ages.

Exactly! Something >> nothing.

Different flavours of something aren't so important in comparison.

First, wet lube was invented by the devil.

Second, if you have a proper waxing set up, do that. If not use Squirt or a similar wax based lube.

WD40.... OMG. That isn't an oil.

Finish Line Ceramic wet. Tried others and wet is the best. Dry useless for commuting and long days off road where it may be wet.

Did anyone else buy the bargain 1 litre (?) bottle of Mucoff wet from PlanetX for ~£7 sometime around ten years ago? Lifetime supply, even with a few bikes!

10+ years ago I had a moderate sized bottle of Progold Prolink lube and still had some left when I bought my fatbike in Feb '16. What I forgot was that it was a dry weather lube and my fatbike commuted in all weathers, no rust but failed the chain wear test within 500 miles before I realised the error of my ways.

I used engine oil from the can in the garage all my life up until I started touring, then I bought some Finish Line because I wanted a small bottle I could take with me. I continued using Finish Line just because the bottles proved they could be relied upon not to leak in the luggage.
