The Departed.

A puzzling film of many disjointed ingredients that just somehow works very well. Surprisingly, Mark Wallyberg puts in a good performance, probably because he's playing himself. Alex Baldwin is mesmerising as the slightly obtuse and very verbose police captain, Martin Sheen is great as the straight man at the top of the tree, and Jack Nicholson is delicious as the oirish gangland leader.

Extremely violent, with a well paced plot, and an unetterly unforseen and brilliant twist at the very end. Well worth getting in some beer and Doritos and settling in for this one.

8/10.

You should check out the Hong Kong original, Infernal Affairs. That's decent.

Ip Man 3, probably the best of the 3.

The usual top class fistcuffs and bad guy spanking, but the story is strong enough that it means the film isn't as reliant on the action as most martial arts films are.

It was that good it would probably be a martial arts film that even Mrs Stephec would watch, except she was watching that dancing nonsense instead (ffs, how long's that been on for now?)

Even me with my heart of stone was a bit moist eyed at the end.

9/10.

I watched a few films last night although I'd saw them all before, Shooter, Ironman II and one about a cop in the White house (so memorable I forgot its name).

Edit: White House Down

Amazonian Prime? Shooter is my guilty pleasure, I love it.

The wife and I watched the Town the other night. I've seen it many a time, but she hadn't and wanted to watch it after catching the beginning when we were in NYC last weekend. Luckily I had it on Blu-ray already.

I bought a bunch of oldies on UHD Blu-ray the other day, so I shall be soon watching films I've paid a ridiculous amount of money for and have already seen lots of times! They be Close Encounters, Unforgiven, Gladiator and Blade Runner. Gotta use the 4K TV to full effect, though, eh...

Part of its perfection is the fact that it's also only an hour and ten minutes long... or an hour and twenty-five if you sit through the closing credits.

Another great 'found footage' film you may have missed is Troll Hunter.

Troll Hunter is miles ahead of Cloverfield IMO, which is OK but not a particularly unique take on the "creature feature". Other found footage ones I like are Open Water (though swerve all of the sequels for they have nothing to do with the original) and Rec (the sequels are definitely worth watching here).

I saw Tomorrowland at the weekend for family movie night.

I wasn't expecting much, as critical reviews are pretty poor, but I quite liked it.

The leads are good, the visuals are great, the story is intriguing.

It does get a bit on the nose at certain points, but it is a kid's film.

Decent. 6.312 /10

Bohemian Rhapsody. It is incredible. Rami Malek really outdid himself. I only saw him as an actor in the TV series Mr. Robot, but this movie he was incredible.

I enjoyed Troll Hunter, need to watch it again in English though as last time it was Norwegian with English subtitles!.

Three Billboards.

I wasn't so impressed myself, although the individual performances were almost universally awesome. Wood Harrelson topping himself was cracking, dramatic yet saddening.

Very good, but not quite for the reasons the pundits reckoned.

7.5/10.
Enjoyed that one too... thought the acting was excellent, particularly Harleson.
