What film did you watch last night?

Arrival.
I really enjoyed this sci-fi offering, it's well paced...not fast paced mind, thoughtfull, keeps you engaged.
12 Alien ships come to various parts of the earth and sit there, no mailce apparent. Attempts are made seperately to understand and communicate with them (they are not humanoid, don't 'speak' but project images that portray 'language' of some kind. Some countries are suspicious, some not, few are working together. One linguistic expert cracks their 'language' and there is a purpose to their arrival.

That's where I got lost, perhaps I missed an important piece of the jigsaw, I don't know but I came away thinking....whats going to happen in 3000 years, how were we going to be instrumental in their survival, what was the 'weapon they talked of ?....what were they offering us ?

It left many questions unanswered and I found that frustrating....but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

I just read a spoiler for the film that explained all the above...and it makes sense now, although I suspect you need to listen VERY intently to the dialogue in the film AND interpret it in the right way to come to the conclusion the writer intended.
It's very deep and clever...and yet some aspects and scenes in the film (the future, the past, now, all melding into one...non linear) you can accept...but not necessarily understand.

WW2 spys fall in love.
Didn't enjoy it. Incredulous and unbelievable accuracy achieved by their Stem guns, a crashed German bomber that narrowly missed their house in London appeared to have the tailplane of a Fw200 Condor, which AFAIK was never a bomber but a maritime reconissance aircraft, I found the whole thing just plain daft.

I quite liked that when I watched it a while back.

When I was younger I used to like the more action based WWII films, Guns of Naverone, Where Eagles Dare, Von Ryan's Express, etc.

Now I also like ones set in that period with more of a people based story as well, I even enjoyed Yanks when I watched it recently.

Pain and Gain.

A semi true story about some bodybuilders who abduct a businessman and torture him to make him sign over all his wealth. They then bodge up killing him.

Quite entertaining, all the more so because it's inspired by real events. Even by hismkwn standards Dwayne Johnson is swole in this. Mahoosive.

Just emerged from the two hour CGI-fest that is Thor: Ragnarok, watched at the insistence of my daughter who, for reasons that escape me, is a big fan of all things Marvel. Just dross. Two hours of mind-numbing 'action' - incessant fighting, mostly - and relentless CGI. No characters, no plot, no narrative, nothing - just a fake landscape awash with frenetic movement, brightly coloured light, and noise. Oh, and 'humour', apparently. Worse than bad. Actually depressing. Popular movies used to mean Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid ('Who are those guys?') Now it appears to be this. God help us all.

I suffered Angry Birds the other week with the grandkids (who TBF watched it intently)...but i was bored after 15 minutes. no apparent storyline at all, no humour, no great characters that you usually associate with these films...it was just dire.

Karl Urban and the rather pleasant Sofia Wotsername. Straight cop gets put away after being set up. Upon release goes lookingmfor justice, yadda yadda.

Ok, plot is quite reasonable, albeit with holes large enough for a fart to pass through without diminishing in odour.

The TV series was far, far superior. Unfortunately, they only made one season of it.

Never go Back.

The second, and it seems the last Jack Reacher movie. Tom Cruise captures the intensity of the character, but has none of the physical presence. The franchise is moving to Netflix, where a much larger chap is taking on the role.

A but painful really. Far too much deviation from the plot. On the good side, lots of bad people getting slapped, lots of Krav Maga (IDF empty hand combat technique), lots of dead/unconscious bad guys.

4/10. The time would be better spent reading the book.

Saw a few over the last few days.

The Crazies. The 2010 remake of the 1973 Romero classic.
Decent. Tense and scary without relying too heavily on jump scares. Timothy Olyphant is good. Lacks a proper antagonist though.

Slither.
Total B-movie nonsense, but an amusing script and charismatic performances from Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks raise it up a bit. Michael Rooker is good.
Good fun as long as you set your expectations.

Skyscraper.
Utter guff. The Rock isn't up to his usual charming and personable screen presence - maybe the plot is too grim for him to shine through it. A few good scenes, but pretty meh overall. Not completely terrible, but completely forgettable.
