The original script and the finished film did include the the Chandler case, but lawyers got involved and forced it to be cut from the movie.

Version I've heard is that they could only get the rights to use the music if the story met with approval.
So it is a case of true story without music or a "nice" story with music.

Lots of good actors. I thought the big baddie played by Kim Coates was good**. He's the one that bragged about shooting the boy and enjoying it, then Costner shoots him in the forehead.
**good as in he made you hate the character.

I enjoyed that bit. I liked that they didn't drag it out, he just shot him dead, no messing
