What gig did you go to last night?

Charming but somewhat feckless

Shalamar at the Royal Concert Hall.
My wife bought the tickets and her pal couldn’t go so I went along instead. What I didn’t know was that the special guest supporting Shalamar would be Gwen Dickey, ‘the voice of Rose Royce’.
She was stupendous and I’d have been happy to pay the ticket price just for her performance.
As for the main act? Meh. I recognised just four of the songs and their interaction with the audience was cringeworthy cheesiness.
Gwen, on the other hand, absolutely connected and got a far better reception. In fact, the applause and cheering was so intense at one point that she couldn’t get started on her next song. She looked genuinely shocked and moved by the audience’s response. I thought she was going to cry.
If you get the chance to see her, grab it.

Saw Richard Ashcroft at Westonbirt Arboretum last night. Always a great set and on a summers evening in a lovely venue - very nice.

Busy weekend. Saw Harry Styles at Wembley on Friday night. I was a 'plus one' so it wasn't my area of expertise, but it was an amazing show and great atmosphere. We were held up in traffic so missed the support act, Shania Twain.
Then we'd got free tickets for BST in Hyde Park for Saturday evening - Mumford and Sons headlining. Again, not my first choice but my wife is a fan. Anyway, good gig and they had special guests of Hozier and .... Shania Twain. Good job.
Friday night a stadium full of people of which at least 90% were there as fans to see the gig. Saturday night was about 50% people arsed about the music and the rest hanging about in British Airways or American Express hospitality and having a evening out.

Just got back from Eddfest and I'm wishing I'd booked tomorrow off work.
Shania Twain's Banjo player was Polly Bolton, formerly of The Magpies and now in The Trials of Cato.
Two folk bands I highly recommend, but nothing like Shania Twain (or Harry Styles).

Been at 2000 Trees festival, stewarding, enjoyed Hyphen, The Scratch (lovely and a bit raucous Irish band) and Alt Blk Era - a sort of fun hiphoppy female duo

Went to see the Sex Pistols at The Piece Hall in Halifax on Saturday evening - excellent gig (even though I don't usually like outdoor venues). The Undertones were the support band, so even better. Icing on the cake was that they showed the England game on the big screen afterwards so no need to go find a packed pub to watch.
I attended a mass at St Eustache in Paris back in the '90s so I could hear the organ, must try that again sometime.

Was that Pistols with Frank Turner? Sounds a much better lineup than the Billy Idol version I saw a few years back, really didn’t work for me.
Undertones were very good when I saw them last year though.

Frank Carter - who is very good. Not trying to be Johnny Rotten, but a great front man in his own right (IMO) - and I saw the Pistols when Lydon was still with them 20-odd years back. Never saw the Billy Idol line up. The gig is up on YouTube if you want to see it - just search Sex Pistols Halifax July 2026 or something like that.
The Undertones were great for a support band and similar in that Paul McLoone - the front man who replaced Feargal - is also very good without trying to be Feargal. Only slight hitch was they started the gig early so we could get the whole England game on the big screen so we missed the first 10 minutes. Saw them last year at the Roadmender in Northampton.
