Had another go at cleaning my front caliper pistons, hopefully I can stop the awful disc rub, although I’m not sure it’s just sticking pistons, I think the caliper mount wasn’t flat and might need facing.

Anyone got experience of adjusting the angle of Deda Elementi adjustable stems?

Not sure if I adjusted mine correctly and couldn't find model specific info online, last changed it ~4+ years ago.

Loosened 5mm side bolt by angle markers, loosened 4mm bolt on underside of angled stem bit, reduced angle from -30 to approx -17 degrees, tightened 4mm bolt then 5mm bolt.

Road bike with this stem is on turbo, seems ok, definitely feels more comfy with bars raised a bit.

My commuter is in the lbs, so I'll have to take my gravel bike to work tomorrow. So I was playing about with a mud guard on it. If I mount the guard on the seat tube I can get the Varia in easy but it sit in such a way on the seat stays that it won't cover all the tyre (it'll be slightly to the right or left). If I mount it on the seat tube I would get full coverage but I wouldn't get the Varia in. Id have to put a dumb light in its place. With this storm thats passing through i think I'll need fuller coverage. Then it clicked if I use another mount for the Varia it sits far enough out from the clamp and saddle that I can position it upside down between the saddle rails and I can position the dumb light on the stay. The dumb light will probably get wet and muddy but I like to run a back up light.

Edit the Varia can't function properly upside-down, it's a near constant beeping.

Had a few hours free this morning and thought i would take 30 minutes fit a cassette and tyres to wheels for my Raleigh project, fit bottom bracket and down tube cable stops and make a list of bits i need then cut the grass etc easy morning.
Compaired to aero bikes more traditional bikes are both easy and fun to work on but this morning i was ready to give up, never have i had a tyre so difficult to fit, bought a Challenge paris roubaix on sale and never again will i buy one, so much for gardening all my time was taken up fitting one tyre.
Good news is the Raleigh 853 takes 28mm tyres so should be a really nice bike when built, even the oversize tubes look great

A little bit of home maintenance this morning. Our front door handle was one of the pad types and always difficult to use and was becoming weathered. Having measured all the important dimensions, PZ, SCREW TO SCREW etc I sourced one from Screwfix. Brilliant. As in all fettling it was`nt all plain sailing fitting the new handle. The plate of the new handle was a couple of mm shorter than the original, no big deal but; I could use the new spindle and it would fit OK but the original spindle is in two halves and spin independently, this is done for security. The easy solution was to cut the original spindle by 3 mm so the new handle was flush. All in all a 25 minute job and the wife is pleased.

I switched my Giant Contend commuting bike's tyres from knobbly Smart Sam 700x35s to Giant OEM 700x32 in a surge of optimism following a sunny morning ride yesterday.

This revealed that the disc pads I had replaced with resin ones in January were already badly worn on the front.

The weather has been especially crap. I replaced them with another set of resin ones I had in stock, and have ordered semi-metallics to replace those when they too wear out. Also re-centred the front brake caliper to be on the safe side. I then mislaid the caliper retaining pin spring clip which I had placed on a tyre lever when I used the tyre levers to push the pistons back in. Couldn't see it anywhere.

So, I ordered 5 of these pesky spring clips from an ebay seller.

Tidying up later, of course I found the little clip nestling on the bench.

Why does one job always generate/reveal two or three more?

My Mum's old Raleigh could be disassembled completely with one steel bike tool.

2nd fettle of the day, changed the RD inner cable before it gave any trouble after reading an earlier post today. The original cable was with the bike new in 2024 but was a 2023 model so thought that It would be a wise move. The cable was easy to fit on the Tiagra brifters and derailleur. Indexing took a bit longer as getting the initial cable tension right is crucial.

Yesterday as Spring seemed to be finally on its way. I moved my Wahoo Mount from my winter bike to my second best bike and also the speed sensor only for the weather to go to pants.
