Plumbing duty today as the plunger on the basin plug in the downstairs loo wasn't moving so sorted that out and hey presto

I think i have found the cause of my knee pain as although i set the saddle height and reach on the weigh cx build up right i never thought to check the saddle setback from the BB.After some measuring i worked out it has a really steep seat tube and it meant i was only at most 2 cm behind the BB from the saddle tip rather than my usual 4-5 cm and that is with the saddle most of the way back on the rails .
Options are to get a layback post and a shorter stem but i am undecided as i dunno if it would look odd with the height of the post as is anyway ? the other option is to strip it for parts as most of them can be used as spares or for another build as the frame was a freebie anyway .

tried to put a bit of a layback seatpost on the bike which also needed a saddle change as i couldnt get the spoon back enough on the rails , this also means i needed a shorter stem . Even with this set up im still only at 3.5 cm of layback

It's been a somewhat annoying set of fettling over the past couple of days:
Firstly, the Carlton Franco-Suisse which has been on sale for months has been dismantled. I'm not happy with that but despite dropping the price massively there was almost no interest: it appears to be far too big for almost everyone. All items on eBay tomorrow evening.
Similarly, the Dawes Kingpin project I started back in 2019 has been stopped. Getting the rear wheel in has been the issue, together with me not being really that strong a rider these days for the intended plan. That's also been dismantled, although I'll keep most of the parts for now but the wheelset's also on eBay tomorrow.
The Giant FSR has had an issue with front shifting, so I adjusted the front derailleur and hopefully that will be OK. If it doesn't I've picked up a spare front derailleur and front shifter.
I've some problematic rear wheels which have just been put away rather than dealing with them over the past couple of years. So, I had a look today at what the causes were. Firstly, a Fastop rear wheel has a broken freehub. Secondly, a Parcours rim has a flat spot. Finally, a Hed rim won't sit properly despite re-dishing. All three are also on eBay tomorrrow. I could get the Parcours hub built on the Fastop rim but am more likely to shift them on and buy a full wheelset.
The Thompson Capella has received a pair of carbon wheels, with new carbon pads. I'll be testing that tomorrow.

Berthoud stainless steel mudguards are a fair bit of work but worth it when done.
A new cork spacer was measured, cut & shaped, but this time attached with a bolt & washers: the previous unsecured cork held out for 25K today before it was bounced out somewhere on the road - never to be seen again.
Existing mudguard placement improved after filing out the drill points & resetting the stays. This frame has mudguard threads in the chain stay bridge & also under the seat stay bridge, negating the need for any hanger attachment there - usually fragile & rattly in previous experience.
The bike was cleaned & polished after it was all ok.

Finally finished the Ridley X-Bow with the 10speed Campagnolo Centaur brifters, 10speed Shimano 105 rear derailleur and 9speed cassette. Shifting is at least as good as the complete Shimano Sora shifting gear on the commuter.

This evening I prepped the Holdsworth Roi de Velo track bike for when I can ride the track again after my hand injury, which will hopefully be later this month.
I'd put a 40cm Prime handlebar on as a test before Christmas, with the narrower bars working in a race but with an issue. They're incredibly light and we'd bought them for son no. 2's hillclimb bike, with the result that on a velodrome I found them flexing which was quite disconcerting.
So, I've swapped them for a 40cm Fizik Cyrano R1 Snake set-up which are very similar to typical track bars. Adding double-wrapped Kranx Stretta Primo tape in black with orange accents, which is anti-shock and very sticky, should help with the vibrations from the track and one potential risk to me being able to ride it. I've taken a liking to this tape after it was used on my Ridley Fenix winter bike by my LBS. It's on the Ridgeback Platinum audax bike as well, plus now the track bike.

I've got a vintage Shimano Altus derailleur on eBay, which I'd bought for a project but used something else instead. It had apparently arrived with new grease.
When listing it the jockey wheels felt stiff, so I took it apart this morning. Yes, it had some new grease in there, but that appears to have simply been sprayed on/in over the ancient grease. So ... dismantled, old grease cleaned out, then re-assembled with new grease only. It all works nicely now.
What was interesting is the way it's put together, from when derailleurs were over-engineered:

I'm a complete numpty #N of many:
Nice bike has been suffering from squealing (actually more like honking) rear (rim) brake. Replaced the blocks with koolstop ones a couple of weeks ago, which seemed to solve it, only to slowly come back worse than ever, and now totally insufferable, especially with an Alps trip upcoming. Bit of a mystery and very frustrating, never had squealing rim brakes before.
Anyway, decided to replace with some new bog standard shimano ones I had, only to find they were both right hand. "Bugger" thinks I, "fool that I am, I must somehow have put two left hand pads on a bike". Then I remember, I've replaced the blocks on my son's bike while he's away, so that must be the one, and they've never been used.
Sure enough, swapped one out, brakes now new, and wondering what will happen to the mystery squeal.
Hilly ride planned tomorrow to test.
If that goes badly, any recommendations for blocks to avoid squeal?

Clean the rims with alcohol and a scotch pad
New brake blocks for the Raleigh Royal and on my old Galaxy took the back wheel out, got rid of the rust on the bridge between the stays and then adjusted the mudguard accordingly. Only to find that one of the brackets that the mudguard stays attach to has come away from the mudguard. So all taken off again and drilled a small hole through the 'guard and the bracket and put a small nut and bolt through it. All good now. For the time being. 😁
