What Have You Fettled Today?

Cleaned out the Peaty's from my rear tyre on the winter wheel and filled it with Orange Seal. It seated nicely first time and after half an hour is holding air good. I'm away to bed now but I hope its still like that tomorrow and I'll do the same for the front wheel and fit them on Friday or at the weekend.

Edit, it stayed solid overnight, so its onto the front wheel tonight. Although if this unseasonably warm weather continues, it might be next week before they replace the summer wheels.

A bit of a doh moment on tonight's fettle. I cleaned out the old sealant from my front winter wheel. The tyre went back on very easy and I filled it with Orange Seal. It never seated 1st time so I rotated the wheel to encourage it to seat. Doh, I hadn't noticed the tyre was caught behind the valve and sealant spilled out. I lifted the tyre on to the valve base thinking it would be fine topped the sealant up. Double doh! This time I lifted it over completely and the tyre sealed instantly. Doh, I should have done that in the first place!

Today I have mostly been fitting long cage XT cages to my GRX812 11 speed rear mech so it will play nicely with this comically enormous 11-51 deore cassette.
Take that North Yorkshire Moors!!!

Swapped out my good carbon wheels (rim brake) for my winter wheels after I'd changed the pads and swapped the cassette over. Then tinkered with the brakes untill I had them operating how I like.

My CAADX had had a new fork fitted. I adjusted my pannier to fit the different rack on this bike. (I had forgotten that I actually have matching panniers - I should have left pannier #1 set up for my other rack-equipped bike and set up pannier #2 for the CAADX). I fitted a spare out-front Wahoo mount to the handlebar. I then went out for a shakedown ride yesterday.

I called in at the LBS mid-ride to scrounge a couple of bolts to hold the front mudguard on, having lost the ones that I took off the old fork! I'll try to fit the mudguard later today (Sunday). Hopefully, the positions of the mounting holes on the new fork match those on the old one otherwise the mounting stays might be too short.

I noticed a few things on the ride, leading to some late night fettling!

• The handlebar looked like it was ever so slightly off perpendicular to the wheel so I have nudged it round a smidge.
• The saddle also looked like it was not quite pointing straight ahead so I have nudged that round a smidge too.
• I discovered that the seat post has a micro-adjustment for angle. The nose of the saddle had been digging in where I didn't want it digging in (!) so I have tilted it down by about 1 degree. Hopefully, that subtle adjustment will do the trick.
• My CAAD5 has been put away for the winter. I borrowed its bar-end mirror for the CAADX. I'll buy another one before the spring to fit to the CAAD5.
• The 32C tyres had been a bit soft (~3.5 bar) so I have pumped them up. The maximum recommended pressure for these tyres is 5.5 bar. I put 4.5 bar in the front tyre and 5.0 in the rear one.
• I had noticed a slight juddering when using the front brake. I had wondered if the headset adjustment wasn't tight enough but it turned out that it was probably the front quick release. I had tested the front end by dropping it from a height of about 15 cm above the floor. A resultant judder usually comes from the headset, but mine didn't need tightening. I found that tightening the QR did stop the noise though.

I will do another test ride to see if I have improved matters as much as I think that I have.

Recovered my 12Ah Milwaukee battery. It had drained almost to zero. BMS and charger refused to begin charging. I had to gently lift the voltage from 4Volts back up to nearly full charge. Even then BMS refused to allow battery to operate. Final step was to place it on proper charger, which reset BMS. All seems well, I will check voltage after 24 hours to see if it maintains charge.

Saved myself £250 if it does

The rivet attaching the front mudguard to the lower stay broke today. What remained has been prised out and a small nut & bolt fitted instead.
It's not much, but it's all I've needed to do other than routine cleaning & lubing for a long while.

It turned out that the scrounged bolts were too short... Fortunately, I managed to find the bolts that I had lost!

The mounting holes in the forks were in the right place so the front mudguard is now back on the bike.

Something in the air as one of my rears had came off on Fridays commute home, used the metal screw and nut from an old wheel reflector which does the job.

New schwalbe landcruiser tyres and tubes on the Raleigh ready for the mud on the pennine trail!

Monday 27th

Took the rack off my wifes unused (probably since Covid) Boardman hybrid & transferred it to my work-bike
I usually just stuff my sandwiches/etc in the jacket back pockets
(& take fresh/collect dirty uniform, when I go in car on a weekend)

I think I'll have to move the lower seat-post light though, as it's now partially concealed

I’ve been trying to get a rack-mount light for this, instead of the ‘trailer triangle’
I saw a Cateye on the Halfords site, as l had a gift-card that someone had got me, after doing them a few favours

It stated on their website ‘available in store’

I’d tried last week, at the Pontefract & Wakefield stores
Staff at both stores told me they didn’t have it
As l had to go into Wakefield this afternoon, l tried again
The chap on duty, told me that some items were not on display, & got me one out of a cupboard
He even charged me the ‘web-price’ too; £13.99, instead of ‘in store’ of £18.99!!

Didn’t even bother asking for British Cycling discount at that price!
So now, that's 5 rear lights, quite a bit of built-in redundancy
There's 3 of these (sadly there's no way of determining 'low battery', hence the multiple use) & I'm not sure about the 5th light? (top of the seat-pin)

Stripped down the Trek over the weekend. Cleaned up all the important moving parts and gave the chain an ultrasonic bath. Retrued the rear wheel and tweaked the derailleur hanger.

Then fitted the mudguards which was made harder by me losing the fitting bolts so I bodged together something that worked from some spare bolts. Not ideal fittings but a bit of threadlocker should hold it all together so it won't come loose and rattle later.

First wheel build: 36 ACI Alpina spokes 3X/ Kinlin MLD/ T610 Deore hub & Velox tape. Made up 2 years ago - including a reset of the bearing preload - & only recently fitted (a credit to the durability of an Italian-made DRC ST16 that refused to wear away & has only now finally given up).

...A lot of error & trial & more error - plenty patience required...

As installed; cleaned & checked for true this morning - all ok. Approximate cost was £74.
