Apart from the chafing, material rucking up and generally being uncomfortable, I don't see the point of another item of clothing, or items when commuting, unnecessarily being in the wash.

yep...still no underwear for me today. I was worried in the icy conditions would there by any problems.....but glad to say after close inspection all was ok!!
