The latest thinking is that the virus jumped from bats to another host before infecting humans. However there were actually bats for sale in the market were the virus originated.

I was listening to an old radio 4 programme on the BBC sounds app the other day, it was saying that viruses never stop mutating, I’m sure they said SARS came from bats, and the required amount of mutations had occurred to enable humans to catch it, the professor explaining this said that it’s a coronavirus and that other versions of this family of virises will mutate and transfer to humans, it’s just a matter of when, in the case of SARS it also mutated to stay at the top of the lungs rather then the bottom, so that a good cough ensured it spread more easily, this programme was first aired in 2013, so it seems those in the know, knew this was coming, but not when, or which strain would do it.

Not convinced.

If you were to allocate £50Billion or whatever it is to railway infrastructure (broadly "a good thing"), it is highly unlikely you'd choose spend it on HS2 if you were looking at return on investment. You could do loads of signalling and track improvements across the piece rather than shaving 10 minutes off the time from Manchester to London which is arguably irrelevant for most people.
The 10 minutes (more I believe) is not what's its about. Its about reducing road traffic and dealing with the under capacity on other lines. Also the amount that will saved on widening roads etc.

Money, basically. My sister for example, a professional musician, doesn't have guaranteed work until September.

The tattoo artists I go to have had to close their studios.

I've had to close my own design studio.

But this goes beyond that. Theatres, cinemas, multi-venues big and small are shut down.

This has a huge impact.
I bought £30 worth vouchers for an independent cinema nearish to me and my daughter did a well. Probably only use it once a year. Also she has daughter now so not sure when we will get to use it.......the tickets are good for 5 years though!!

Well, it's all academic now. Work is on hold because of the crisis, and with the cash the government is having to splash about who knows if or even when they'll be able to afford to resume? By then we could have a new government, or even a different party in government, so no one really knows. I'm 51, and if its finished before I kark it I'd be very surprised, and I'm planning on loving to a ripe old age.

Some of us are in employment and trying to keep going (on line) - I could easily volunteer but work requires me to be there. It's not been a productive week so far, very quiet, and time in 'meetings'.... which don't produce work. Less meetings though... Not a good week since leaving the 'office'.

From your link "didn’t find so many bats,” . What the hell does that mean!!
As I said bats are responsible for huge amount of viruses including rabies. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rabies-in-bats

"But the statement added that in 2002, a man died from rabies acquired in the UK from a bat. He had been infected with the EBLV-2 virus, which has previously been detected in Daubenton’s bats in the UK."

That doesn't naysay the point.
If you're going to spend many tens of billions improving infrastructure, you'd still not go for HS2

Obviously an Aubergine
Who would have thunk, even a month ago, that we could be dicussing virusses transmitted by bats, and HS2 on one thread, and that both would be relevant to the OP ??

What a weird world we have transitioned to..

Surely someone must have a Brexit angle on all this

Not sure if this is the right thread, but....

My son works for a US pharmaceutical company as a robotics engineer and where they make the saline drip bags.

He has asked my wife to make "surgical" masks for the people operating the production line as they can't buy them anywhere!
