Well tomorrow is going to be busy so I'd be tempted to walk across, if there are lots of frustrated holiday folk around! If empty I'd ride across.

I'd ride across, whilst cursing our lamentable highway engineers. Dismounting is to avoid technically breaking a rule but the rule works against cyclists, forcing them to ride a longer, more dangerous route. If it's safe to walk across it's safe to ride across.

Of course the highway engineering is lamentable. It's Somerset. Fantastic scenery but support for cycling is mostly some leaflets and sponsoring the Tour of Britain. We've been waiting for more bridges over the Axe and Yeo for what? 40 years now? While we're climbing hills and mixing with motorists on some pretty dodgy roads, cars speed along the more convenient and flatter M5 that we're banned from...

Thanks everyone. I'll cycle/walk across it tomorrow and shall bask in the knowledge that no matter what, it'll be better than going through Burnham. Incidentally, according to the OS map, NCN 33 goes along the beach. Not the road alongside the beach. On the beach.

Yes, the beach. The beach where some motorists have lost their cars to the incoming tide and the hovercraft has to pull out a few walkers every year. The whole route from Burnham to Clevedon is currently crazy. It may be worthwhile if the bridges are ever built but until then, I'd stick on the minor through roads nearest the coast unless you know a reason not to and you'll get through much better.

I'd go by Burnham and avoid the junction In all seriousness though Id play it by ear (so as to speak) depending upon traffic flow and condition of the red zones, Id either walk or cycle.

There are some lovely stretches but there's also some utter madness. I'm so glad that http://cycle.travel/map shows whether it's hard or soft surfaced.

It's my fault. She was sick a lot in the spring so I cut a load of stuff from her diet and treats box. She was pestering me yesterday so I thought I'd see how she coped with a rawhide chew. Thrilled to bits at 3pm. Sick as, well, a Labrador twelve hours later. I was in the kitchen making myself a recovery drink (fake hot chocolate rather than anything stronger, alas) when the clock turned to 3:33, which I took as a sign confirming my own bad judgement.
