What's the point of cats?

My friend at the animal sanctuary was trying to persuade me that I'd love to take a few hens off her hands but no thanks. Ugly things, but at least you can eat them! Although I guess you could eat a cat too, and if you like Chinese takaway you probably! ;0)

Oh yes. I have four now. Originally got two last Spring, and added a further two this summer. Thing is, if you get an ex-batt or several from a rescue organisation, you are agreeing to take them on as *pets* to give them a home for the rest of their natural born and NOT to view them as egg-laying machines that as soon as they stop laying, you cull them. I'm happy with that. I'm getting two-three eggs per day, most days from my four hens. I'm keeping me & immediate neighbours in eggs. But the eggs are an 'added bonus' if you see what I mean.

but isn't it their responsibility to then have chickens that do?

Having cats and hens... in any scrap it's the cat that'll come off worst and very quickly learn not to chase hens, as my Marble found out. He did insist on sticking his nose up a hen's ar$3, so said hen immediately became Ninja hen by leaping into the air, twirling about and landing a well-aimed beak on the end of the feline nose. ;) My free-roaming hens & family felines ignore each other.

Obviously our of our cats did not read the script. He took out the Xmas turkey about the third week in Nov, the thick bird thought he would peck the cat who promtly turned and deciptated it. We had an early Xmas dinner.

As much as I admire gun dogs and their abilities, is a cat too dim to equal them or clever enough to not want to. The latter, I'm certain.

This is getting a bit silly. I've seen dogs killing sheep, rabbits, hares, foxes and a young deer.

But more importantly, they stick their heads out of car windows. That's why they're better than cats.

Is it just me or are cats shoot? What is their purpose? A dog might rescue its owners from a fire by alerting them at night .

Yeah, one hears of that all the time.

Unless you are writing about 'working dogs', most dogs are, IMO, little more than loud, aggressive mobile sh;t depositing machines.

Cats are a more civilised pet altogether.

So why do they keep crapping in my garden?

Get a cat-hating dog, job done....

Cut up hose pipe in your beds works too (to a degree). Apparently they are shoot-scared of snakes. There are also ultrasonic cat scarers that emit some kind of noise that puts them off (Celine Dion has just got the contract I believe). People I know who have them say they work well.
