The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is probably my favourite, closely followed by Fistfull of Dollars and Few Dollars More.
Blazing Saddles was pretty good. Especially the chase scene that went across the set, off the set, out of the studio gates and off down the road. Very silly.

The Searchers, High Plains Drifter and the Wild Bunch all score highly, but the top Western is
- part shot in Oxford
- has a deal of dialogue in Russian
- has lots and lots of circles
- lost sufficient money to sink the studio
- and, best of all, has rollerskating

Dell, Heavens Gate, no, no, no............

the Western, I've tried, and generally failed, to get my kids interested, I still like them. the early ones, the glory years, the spaghetti stuff and the slight revitalisation, they've all had their moments. As a kid I have fond memories of things like Chisum, The Alamo, True Grit, The Professionals, The Magnificent Seven and the countless others. Things got pretty interesting with harder hitting ones like Once Upon a Time in the West, The Wild Bunch, The Spaghetti stuff, The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Planes Drifter, Pale Rider.....yada, yada. One offs like Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid stand out, one of my first cinematic experiences, A Man Called Horse, Soldier Blue.

Top of the heap has to be Unforgiven and the stand out in that was Gene Hackmans bully boy sherrif.

Without doubt "The Searchers". I never get fed up of watching it.

In 2008 the American film institute declared it the greatest western of all time. Even John Wayne's quote in the film "That''ll be the Day" inspired Buddy Holly to write a song. And John Wayne's portrait of the character he portrayed is recognised as his most finest acted performance and to this day no one has portrayed a character so vividly.

Yet sadly it never won any awards, but behind the scenes the Oscar John Wayne received for the film "True Grit" was acknowledged to make up for not recieving anything for "The Searchers"

I liked a lot of them but The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is probably my favorite. However I watched a cowboy movie recently and turned it off in less than 5 mins, somehow the magic had gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about Dances with Wolves, The man who shot liberty valance ? Really enjoyed Tombstone ,very long film though, any John Wayne western, cant think of a better way to spend a sunday afternoon .The Searchers is my favourite though, stunning film.
There are alot of lesser westerns ,that I would'nt class as 'great' but are an enjoyable watch, such as Silverado and blazing saddles. But Apaloosa what a boring boring film!
